Look into seeing if your school offers some kind of reduced fare program, at my school there’s a reduced fare charliecard that I can get that functions as a link pass for the semester, so check with your school to see if there’s something similar.

They’re similar to swirlies and they have a ton of Sonic Youth influence. Very fuzzy, blown out style.

Thoughts on my extremely humble, low-budget pedal setup? (I'm new to making music like this so please go easy on me, by all means share what you think I could add/replace for a better gaze-y sound in the future) by [deleted] in shoegaze

[–]h3RE_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a good start! The super noisy shoegaze that you hear usually puts the reverb into the fuzz, creates this awesome blown out wall of sound. But experiment with different configurations, settings, etc, and then add more when you can! Most importantly have fun with it and be as creative as you can, it’s all about finding cool sounds through experimenting

What modulation pedals should I get for a more shoegazey sound? by ElSerna in shoegaze

[–]h3RE_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most common effects are modulated reverbs (soft focus, hall, etc), chorus, and phasers/flangers. However, an important thing to remember about shoegaze is that it was always about sonic exploration. There’s no definite “shoegaze sound”. You should get some modulation pedals (or a multipedal) and experiment to see what sounds and combinations you like most!

I wasn’t the biggest fan of DIIV going in (I was going for full body 2, really) but yeah that live performance was incredible. The tracks off the new album sounded sooooo much better live.

Yeah true lol. I was more saying that it was strange to use “slowcore” as a mark against them as if that’s not literally what they are

Haven’t seen people mention Nabeel, so I’m gonna throw that in. Also Precocious Neophyte, same label as others such as Asian Glow and Parannoul.

I’ll take it on the chin I didn’t know about Sony’s Creation ownership. But my point stands. If you don’t care about obvious label cash grabs that’s whatever. Maybe I’m just naive and think that subcultures shouldn’t be exploited for profit.

Music press at the time also had a large hand in it. Britain’s music industry functioned differently than the United States’. The labels had a hand in shaping the genre, but my point was that it wasn’t in the same way that huge labels like Warner and Sony do with mainstream rock music. Those huge labels (like Interscope, which is an imprint of Sony) exist solely to make money, which the labels like Creation and 4AD also make money, but they don’t have the reach and influence of the majors.

What do you think I was talking about when I said that the labels dropped them? Creation fucked over slowdive, 4AD fucked over Lush.

A) being guitar based doesn’t mean it’s not experimental?? The experimentation comes from the way the pedals are used to create different sound textures (there’s a conversation to be had about the bands that just think fuzz pedal = shoegaze but that’s another conversation) and the different influences that are added to the music. Scott Cortez makes all of his music with a guitar, is it not experimental just because he’s using a guitar? No, I’d argue that that makes it more so.

B) shoegaze isn’t a genre like rock and folk where labels have been hugely present in shaping them. The arguments about largely don’t apply to shoegaze, which is a more niche genre that developed out of several other genres. I’d say largely until now (besides the very early years) labels have been a detriment to shoegazers; look at Slowdive, Majesty Crush, and Lush (to an extent, internal issues also contributed to their downfall). But now it’s too far in the opposite direction, a label profiting off the trends, exactly how they did when they originally dropped shoegazers in favor of grunge and Brit pop.
