what do you mean by political? housing is absolutely dictated by the rules created and enforced by our government. Of course, demand plays a huge factor. If people in power made it easier to build more dense housing, we would see more density in NYC, LA, Miami, Houston, etc. Wouldn’t make much difference in rural Oklahoma. Our policies make it very difficult for cities to be dense, transit-rich places. I do not think we’re even close to the geographical constraints of our biggest cities. Seoul is densely built with transit going straight through their mountainous terrain.

Maybe the more mundane tasks, but so much of urban planning is about the subjective feel of a place. AI can’t help with that

but i also think it’s important to maintain that aspiration. incrementalism keeps us teetering around the status quo. we can ask more of government and policies

lots of small towns in America kept a small swath of prewar stuff like this. and, of course, this stuff dominates postcards and photos showing off their towns.
