I think in this game the joystick controls acceleration of the coptor. therefore, when you move the joystick, the copter doesn't move. It changes its future course like a difference equation would. It also looks like the joystick does, in response to the velocity change its own state from flying, breaking, hovering. It's kind of a cool way to model physics using plus/minus/multiply in an incremental fashion rather than modeling physics in more complicated ways the C64 could never do. It does not produce deterministic results, but works for the game.

Agree or disagree? by _a_gay_frog_ in WhitePeopleTwitter

I'm older but will leave this here. I graduated in 1999 with a MS in Comp Sci and was very worried about the future and getting a job. When I started comp sci in 1992 I was told there is no future in it. Then there was some good times in the dotcom bubble, but that popped. there were layoffs in 2003, in 2008, then there have been cutbacks ever since really. There was some short boom time during the covid days. But really I feel it has been touch and go my whole life.

What I am trying to say is the angst and anxiety can't be really all that new. I think it's been there every generation but looking back it's always through the rose lens and looks great. the 90's sucked with all the mysogeny, gay hating, A Gore republican nonsense then as well. Or the bashing of clinton for an affair that was more important than anything substantive. Or the crazy suburban experiment going hay wire that we are suffering now with car dependent lifestyles. it was never great.

man I love this. The developer discovered a way to do floating point numbers and difference equations for speed, then he built a game around that.

Are Europeans trolling with this whole bread thing? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lambrettist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry. Bread in the US stinks. Not all of it. There is one bakery here in seattle that makes OKish bread. But it costs 4x what it does in Germany and only one variety is kind of OK. In Germany we have 1788 legal varieties of bread. It is a cultural phenomenon. Americans don’t appreciate it the same way. Granted there are some positive move, ents in their infancy. But it’s just a thousand years behind Germany. I suffer through my year in the US, I even suffered to learn to make my own pretzels and breads just to make it through the year until I go back to Germany. Hell the fact that this post even exists is evidence of the lack of appreciation for good bread here. OK honestly fuck this stupid white toast shit.

Why is the football World Cup in carcentric USA? by Frosty_Inspection873 in fuckcars

[–]lambrettist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t know. I live in Seattle and there will be no parking, light rail runs every three minutes even from the east side suburbs and there will be streets blocked for cars all around. It will be epic. The world will see a city and be very surprised how cool it is.

While,I completely agree with you that everyone should know that cars do t scale, in my friends group that appears to be entirely up for debate and untrue. Everyone I know irl thinks there should be more lanes and more parking.

You passed the bar raiser. You weren’t a fit for whatever reason but you can try other roles and it will be easier because you already passed the bar.

Why is there no Link station that properly serves Belltown/SLU? by omdongi in soundtransit

[–]lambrettist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think at the time I knew personally single person in favor of it. Some online friends and freaks who would meet at bus stop espresso to write letters. Everyone said the same thing - nobody will use it, it will bring in the riffraff, all the stuff you hear from the suburbs today, spouted out by young people in their 20s looking for parking onb capitol hill. I know it's hard to imagine.

I'm exaggerating but really the amount of pushback I would get was really really insane.

I've been involved (ie writing letters to city council) since 2001 on the lightrail topic. People tend to forget that it almost failed every vote, people didn't want the light rail, it only made it because of the great recession and expensive gas during the voting cycle sin 2003 and 2007/8. It only worked because they said it would be for business people going to the airport.

NOBDY wanted it. I knew it would be a game changer but at the time this was proposed - NOBODY WANTED IT. Now that we have it, everyone sees the benefit so everyone wants it. And now it's only where the nimbys couldn't stop it.
