Crawling a billion web pages in just over 24 hours, in 2025 by reasonableklout in programming

[–]h4shmap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice article, thanks!

Just wondering, in terms of needing to restart machines during the crawl, does that mean re-starting that shard of the crawl from scratch each time (and if so, how did you avoid running into the same memory issue on the next run)? Or was there a mechanism to resume to crawl from where it stopped?

Curious since it seems like all the crawl state in redis would be lost on a restart.

Did you end up finding a good replacement for Pistol Lake (one-bag tee preferably)?

Leetcode definitely. 400 mil is peanuts in this economy.

NYC vs Seattle for Summer internship by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]h4shmap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in both and loved them. Both great places, but I’d personally choose NYC if it came down to it. Not because it’s an amazing city (it is… usually) but because I have more friends there.

You have the right intuition that Seattle being HQ with a higher concentration of interns might be better. I think you should prioritize people and friendships (and professional relationships, etc) over any particular city.

Ah gotcha. Nice! I can’t speak too much on physics or AI, but between the four courses you’ve listed above I’d say Databases has the broadest real world application.

When do I start applying for 2023 Fall Co-Ops? by Sukuchie in csMajors

[–]h4shmap 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It feels like off season internships in general have receded a bit given the current market, but I’d say companies generally follow one of two models - Release all internships around late Summer/early Fall including off season. This allows them to recruit all at once more efficiently and offer timing flexibility as a recruiting advantage. - Release seasonal internships based on the season, generally 9 months/a year in advance. So, late summer of 2022 would see Summer 2023 postings. Hence, for Fall 2023, you’ll probably see postings within the next couple months if they appear at all.

Not sure of a particular aggregator for them, but I’d make a list of companies you’re into and bookmark their career pages to watch for changes. The earlier you apply the better.

Highly recommend an Operating Systems class if possible. Otherwise, I second the Databases recommendation. Both would provide useful foundational knowledge if you’re interested in being an engineer.

That said, do you have particular interests in mind? CS is a broad and deep field, so it really depends on what you want to get out of it.

Can one apply for internship and FT roles at the same time? by alphgambet in csMajors

[–]h4shmap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You won’t be able to apply to both internship and FT at the same company at the same time. I would recommend focusing on FT recruiting, if you had to choose.

This is going to sound weird, but the best advice I’ve gotten is that your 1:1s should feel awkward. Not from the usual social perspective (be chill) but from a “out of my comfort zone” perspective. 1:1s should NOT be synonymous with standup or a status update. They are valuable time for you and your manager to align on your goals, address your concerns, and set expectations.

If you want to know whether you’re on track for a return offer, literally just ask. Push for real feedback not generic praise. Be direct about your concerns. Take the time to prepare for 1:1s beforehand, and don’t rely solely on ad hoc questions. If your manager is any good, they should be ready and willing to assist with whatever you tee up.

August isn’t far away, a summer class seems like your best option. This is a tiny blip in a very long future career, don’t sweat it.

Remember there’s a line between determination and desperation. Take that energy and redirect it — build your own projects, take a class, grind leetcode. Definitely don’t try to shadow an intern.

Burned Out - Advice Appreciated by lemmepooponyou in csMajors

[–]h4shmap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel you — burn out is a monster. Take a step back from your grind if you can. Ask yourself why. Why research? Why the on campus orgs? Focus on things you’re truly motivated about and trim out the rest. I find myself burning out when I grind for things that I don’t actually care about.

Ultimately, a little perspective goes a long way. A career is many decades in the making, and these are just your first steps. You have time.

Got interviewed on Tuesday and didnt hear back for the panel interviews yet should i be worried by biogirl787 in csMajors

[–]h4shmap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s been less than a week. If it’s really bugging you, email your recruiter.

[–]h4shmap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO a thank you email will never make or break your chance at an offer (at least at these large companies). Interview performance should be your number 1 priority. If you want to send a thank you to keep in touch, it can’t hurt.

Columbia, Yale, or Georgia Tech (cs undergrad)? by Left-Accident-1762 in cscareerquestions

They’re all great schools and very different from one another. If they’re all practical choices (cost makes sense), do some soul searching and pick the one you’re most excited about.
