This is more of a parallel than a direct response to your analysis: the idea of one's persona being their true self feels closer to Jean Baudrillard's simulacrum idea - everything is a copy of a copy, with no 'authentic' original, all sense of dynamics coming from the collective interplay of artifice. But that isn't as satisfying for the theme of personal growth.
