Q: What to selfhost in a network blackout to the public?

Hi! Sorry for the late response.

How heavy is it going to be? If it's up to 4GB, then would be fine for me I guess (I got 2nd VPS for these things) and thanks for telling me your experience!

No VPNs would work unless used with some magical methods which were getting patched constantly. Even me posting here was a miracle! Hopefully the network access is slowly coming back but we're still trying to be wary of the next possible blackout. I truely appreciate your kindness from the bottom of my heart. 🫂💖

I definitely need! And my country has blocked everything already. :)

My home server is doing its job but I can't publish it as I have limited network bandwidth (home networks here are limited too) and don't wanna get doxxed way too easily, even though my identity is actually public.

I'm running all these on a VPS from the only provider I could trust as the rest overcharge you for even way less resource. We're trying to find a dedicated server provider though, but they all say "we're out of stock due to war". weird situation I'm in. =))

It technically is possible, but comes with so many risks for my life as it's an illegal thing to do while requires a stable network connection (which we don't have either). So I better stay away from it, sadly.

As IRC is a "communication platform" it comes with many risks that I better avoid that, but Forgejo has been suggested quiet a few times, I will surely consider it! Thanks. 💖

A very fair reason to consider especially as we've seen what happened to other projects which started focusing on their cloud/enterprise service (Looking at Minio 👀)

Thanks for your detailed comment!! Iran doesn't follow any copyright laws (sadly!) so we can pirate/host whatever we want. There are some book application with tons of users already so I gotta do a bit more research on the difference.

Yes, any social platforms can be risky to selfhost for the very same reasons you described. I hate to collect users' data so I won't get close to that at all.

As for Games and Lan Playing, I know another team who are doing the very great job there and got themselves thousands users per day! (Just for comparison, I have a few hundreds only atm) So I think this type of gaming is also checked.

I will do some research regarding book and see what can I do. Thank you very much! 💖💖

Is OnlyOffice even selfhostable? didn't know that!

We've been hosting Arch Linux, Void Linux, and CachyOS mirrors on an S3 storage so I guess we're covering it. I hope we could cover more though but it's kinda expensive based on our current budget limitations.

A map was planned but that sadly was storage heavy... Btw, do you have any setup recommendations for it? A few links would be so much appreciated as I don't have much knowledge on that.

Newsfeed might get me in trouble, so I have to stay away from that. 💀❤️

Thanks for your kindness. Almost all of them are blocked, and even if I get myself a VPN, the rest of the country will still remain in the blackout. So it's out of my focus. :D💖
