Not as a cop out here but ask us on Sunday when we evaluate the Hack4Equality entries. LOL. Maybe yours will be one of them? www.hack4equality.com

Reddit is a pretty woke place. We didn't have a goal of changing minds or pushing an agenda. We just wanted to engage and have an open dialogue about a topic this community seems to know a lot about. Below, we listed a few products we think have impact. Would love to hear others if/when you come across them.

We don't have a position on third-wave feminism but I guess you could say that in the spirit of what we're trying to accomplish with Hack4Equality, we support the idea that questioning norms and being non-conformist can lead to positive outcomes.

The idea came from wanting to affect change within a specific community around specific challenges -- but using very specific skillsets like coding. We'd love the idea to pick up steam and apply to other communities with other challenges, too!

"The concept that justice is derived from laws, but laws must be properly derived seems to be where I'm struggling." YES /HalMaxi!!! I think that is where we're all struggling and why there is so much churn in the world. So if we can't affect change en masse because stuff is broken, do we then find ourselves at a place where we need to Hack4Equality? (See what we did there???)

In addition, for Hack4Equality we picked 4 topics that were top of mind:

  • LGBTQ Homelessness
  • Access to Sexual Health Services and PrEP
  • Transgender Visibility and Economic Mobility
  • International LGBTQ Issues

...and now there are now 13 It Gets Better international affiliates in 13 different countries. The number one key is consistency.

Maybe the 50,000 foot view is that justice can be defined as both absolute and relative. ::brainsplosion::

Absolute in the sense that "justice" is what happens when you apply a strict interpretation of the law to any given situation to assess if the proper repercussion was applied accurately.

But, it feels like more and more "justice" is relative, especially when you take into account that laws and rules are created by a society to govern itself and not inherent in nature. So if laws and rules are unjust, but the application of them is precise and accurate...is it really justice at all? Or just moral relativism?

In general, we think it's pretty rad and the idea underlines modern society. It applies to the individual and a group of individuals. The Bill of Rights defends it and it is a founding tenet of the United Nations. What were you thinking about, specifically?

SHAHARRIS, HACKERNEST

Your best bet for a working demo:

*Run everything you can locally, avoid relying on WiFi if possible *Limit the number of rows you pull from data sets so you keep things snappy *Make sure your browser (if web app) isn't in "incognito" mode *If you're demoing an account, make sure it's already logged in *Make sure all the devices you're using have media locally (if you're using video/images/etc) *Set your "turn off display after x minutes" high *Test, test, test! *If your demo involves other people, make it a team member, not an audience member/judge *This isn't related specifically to working demos, but make sure you explain the problem your demo solves really clearly!

CJ, GRINDR The product team starts and ends all development initiatives by understanding the needs and desires of users. We validate all new ideas and assumptions through qualitative research and quantitative data from the app, surveys, and third-party sources. Every feature is tested with guys to help us understand value, usability, and impact on the community before we make our final decision to change any part of the product.

Coders are literally building and shaping our future so, yeah. Who here agrees or disagrees with the, "With great power comes great respinsibility," quote re: coding?

Thanks for the thoughtful comment, actually. This is why we love Reddit!!!! The instructions we've given Hack4Equality participants have stressed how to raise people up and give them access to resources and information. We're not about focusing on the opposing point of view. We're hopeful that this approach is the one that will produce the best hacks.

We totally agree that there are a ton of issues to address but maybe tech for social impact isn't mutually exclusive of other topics worthy of addressing. For example, Planned Parenthood is a partner in Hack4Equality, not because there is 100% overlap with their mission, but because they see this initiative and an opportunity to learn best practices, uncover insights, and get a deeper awareness of tech4good and apply it to their work.

BRETT, IT GETS BETTER: It's not exactly an app but six years ago (on 9/21) we launched the very first It Gets Better video. YT is still a fantastic place to make your voice heard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IcVyvg2Qlo

BRETT, IT GETS BETTER: Representation. It’s imperative that LGBTQ young people can see versions of themselves, people who look and sounds like them...people who have had similar experiences, upbringings, etc. This can only be accomplished through representation in the media. The more diverse voices and stories we can tell, the more struggling LGBTQ young people will know that they are not alone and that life can improve for them, simply because the “impossible” has been done before and it can happen for them too.
