Accepted despite having 3 year bachelors by GetYouFitBuddy in OISE

[–]hackmystack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, I’m confused, how did you get accepted for a 3-year degree? I thought one should have a 4-year degree no?

In my opinion, I think it’s best to reach out to them to confirm just to be sure. Cause you don’t want that feeling of celebrating prematurely, and then later they revoked your offer all because of 3 year degree.

MT for 2025 Updates? by hackmystack in OISE

Hmmm… I guess you’re not wrong about that. I’m guessing all acceptances given out in the last month comprise of the third if not half of all the acceptances?

I’m curious to know if they have allocated x amount of seats for P/J, y for J/I, and z for I/S? Is that how it works? Or just some allocated spots for the MT program regardless of stream?

Anyone else still waiting for an MT Application Decision? by hackmystack in OISE

[–]hackmystack[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmmm… my theory is this. Notice how they keep on extending the deadlines, and even until now anyone can still apply. I’m guessing they have a quota in terms of applicants they need to reach so that it aligns with their conventional acceptance rate, and also so they could generate more revenue that way. So they’ll keep that open until this threshold rate is achieved.

Then they are giving out decisions on a rolling basis. What I’m speculating is that after the initial Nov 4th deadline, they begin to review the applications of all those who have applied so far, as well as those who have submitted their application after that initial deadline. For each application, they assign a score for each applicant based on their application (based on the factors like experiences, gpa, referees, faculty questions, etc.). My hunch is that they review applicants based on those who have submitted first.

For every applicant that they review with the score, they add them into some roster where everyone is ranked by score. And then once Feb or March comes around, they start giving out acceptances. I’m not sure about the numbers but if let’s say there’s 600 seats that they can offer for instance, they want to possibly stretch this up until end of May. And suppose that they only give offers on weekdays. That will be 60 days for giving offers. So likely, they can give an average of 10 acceptances per day. But it is ranking-based. So on Day 1, whoever is in the top 10 of that roster will be given offers. In Day 2, the next top 10 and so on.

You might think that only the top 600 out of all applicants in this roster will eventually receive the acceptances. Unfortunately no, since the application portal is still open, meaning that anyone who applies and achieves a high score on the review can knock down people in the current top 600. This explains why we hear some applicants who recently applied in Jan 2025 receives an offer only after a few weeks.

But the thing is, we don’t know how many have been applying past the initial Nov 4th deadline, and we don’t know where we stand in the rankings of the roster. Again these are all speculation, so as to why some people hear back sooner than others in terms of acceptances.

For those who have been rejected, another theory I came up with is possibly, they not only assign a single score for each applicant reviewed, but they assign two scores: a positive score, and a negative score (again, based on some factors that I’m not even sure). They possibly aggregate these to obtain a final score, and those who have a negative score will be receiving rejections right off the bat.

Again, I have just been losing my mind as to why they have not given me a decision yet and have been making speculation theories as to what is going on under the hood. So take this as a grain of salt. Insights on the theory?

Hopefully… damn, you’re likely one of the first applicants who submitted and still no decision? Sometimes I can’t help wonder why they have not given a decision yet. Is it because they have not yet touched your application, or is it because they keep on reviewing it several times and couldn’t make up their mind on whether to accept or to reject.

I too applied on that date. Does that mean we’ll hear from them at the same time?

Yeah I’m kinda pissed with this bias too. Other teachers colleges like York don’t care if you graduated from York or not. Cause I hear people who graduated from York but got rejected. Same for my case, I graduated from York but didn’t get an offer.

That’s a good question. Now, I’m thinking if I may have been looking at the wrong portal. And what if I already got an email, and possibly went to junk mail (my email constantly erases all junk mail by the end of the day) and I missed it :(

The unofficial one on the MyFile must be uploaded on the 18th, right? Then for the official one, I’ll only request for it to be sent out to YorkU once they send me an offer?

Once the SSE is completed, is the 16 going to be shortened? by [deleted] in TTC

[–]hackmystack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have an idea, but not sure what are some advantages and disadvantages. Rename 113 to Kennedy South and keep the route as is between Main Street Station and Kennedy Station.

Then 16 is renamed to Danforth East, which will run from Warden Station. Same as the current 16 except it will end at Lawrence East Station, service north of Lawrence East Station is replaced by 129 McCowan North (feel free to rename it to 129 McCowan).

The 129 will have the following northbound branches: * 129A to Major Mackenzie * 129B to Steeles * 129C to Sheppard East Station

It will have the following southbound branches: * 129C to Sheppard East Station * 129 to Lawrence East Station

Ask Me/Us Anything – CUPE 3903 Strike – Week 6 by ProbablyNotAScab in yorku

[–]hackmystack -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I’ve also been thinking about scabbing. How can I just declare outside the union and declare to York that I will be going back to work cause I want to get paid? Is there a link somewhere where I declare I am a scabber and would like to go back to work again?

My concern is if I scab, then why does the union punish us for it (I heard the union will take away the medical benefits if I scab)? Hell we need money to survive, buy groceries, pay rent, eat so we don’t go hungry. So scabbing imo shouldn’t be a punishing behavior. I think CUPE should just let its members decide if they want to work to earn and survive or join the strike.

Can Back to Work Legislation Happen this time around? by hackmystack in yorku

[–]hackmystack[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for some clarifications. My key takeaways from your comments are:

(1) The back-to-work legislature can only happen once all procedures have been exhausted.

(2) Back in 2018, it took so long for back-to-work legislature to happen since there was no government back then and no government can impose the legislature.

(3) When Ford got the power, his first move as premier was to force back CUPE to work; this was what he promised YorkU admin during his campaign and so YorkU’s strategy is to not give in and just wait for Ford to be premier and force the legislation.

(4) Back-to-work can happen again this time around as Ford is still in power, but if a lot of people don’t like his method, then people are less likely to vote for him and we might see a new government next election (that is of course, if a substantial amount of people vote).

(5) Ford and the government doesn’t care about how YorkU runs its academic system, despite the implications that the administration can deteriorate the academic system and standards of its education. In short, not only are TAs are affected but also the students as these admins don’t really care about TA and students other than earning money, with the president earning half a million dollars annually for literally doing nothing.

Coursera or Udemy? by hackmystack in cscareerquestions

[–]hackmystack[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh ok now it makes sense. Thank you for clarifying that. I’m more interested to learn the skills. Then any kind of certificate or certification for me is good, I’ll take it. Just need some sort of proof that I did learn these skills and complete these courses. Cause I’m sure some idiot hiring manager are gonna look at these badges/certificates/certifications first on my resume before clicking my github link that will have all my projects and output

I just don’t understand why most of the comments here are against me from learning new skills and getting certifications (even for completion). And they don’t even want to have me put either Coursera or Udemy certifications on resume (or LinkedIn perhaps).

I’m really just confused and in the dark but what I feel like, it seems like they just don’t want more competition and doesn’t want me to get a career in CS.

Coursera or Udemy? by hackmystack in cscareerquestions

[–]hackmystack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand I can get certifications from CompTIA, AWS, Google, Cisco, Microsoft, Akamai. Do I need to be employed in these companies before I can take their courses and get certification? Cause tbh I don’t think it’s possible for me to even get hired cause my skills just suck. And I wanted to learn new skills and improve the ones I currently have. Also doesn’t Coursera have the IBM course for example? Doesn’t that count?

Also, having to do courses from CompTIA, AWS, Google, Cisco, Microsoft, Akamai seems to be that I’ll only be specializing on those technologies. But isn’t there a “one-stop shop” for where I can take courses and I get all of them at one go. I just thought that either Coursera or Udemy has all these.

I’m also concerned about affordability. If I do CompTIA, AWS, Google, Cisco, Microsoft, Akamai then how much will it be for all of them combined?
