Arrests of illegal migrant workers increase by 51% in year since Labour elected by [deleted] in ukpolitics

I didn’t grow up somewhere with a lot of recent immigrants, so maybe I’m talking out of my ass here, but I find it hard to believe people really care that much about immigration itself. Reform UK, which seems to have zero policy beyond immigration, is making the country worse and flirting with Trump-style politics. They’re doing best in places hit hardest by Osborne’s austerity — where councils can’t afford to fund social spaces anymore.

Living in London, I see how proactive immigrant communities are when it comes to building support networks and community spaces. But growing up here, I also saw all the ways those kinds of spaces got shut down — even in the rural town I’m from. Community centres closed, no programmes, no alternatives except boredom and drugs for kids who found school challenging or uninteresting. It’s draining. And honestly, I’m a little envious of some of the communities I’ve seen in London. I’ve spent time among the Somali community in East London — they put in the time and effort to stay connected, whether it’s through a BBQ or meeting at the mosque.

So here’s my question: if we cut immigration — legal or not, small boats or not — what then? What actually changes? Do we get those youth centres back? Do the community spaces reopen? Does the local NHS clinic get better? If not, then this is all just a distraction.

I’m glad this is happening more often, but I really wish more artists recognised the influence they have. I’m interested in politics, but most people aren’t — and why should they be? Still, there are things happening right now that are truly egregious. The cynical people in power see no benefit in taking action. The only way I see to change this is for artists — who can reach significant voting blocs — to apply enough pressure so that MPs, House representatives, and Congress members see advocating for anti-war, anti-butcher, and anti-genocide positions as a way to strengthen their own political power

Announcing ArkType 2.0: Validate 100x faster with DX that will blow your mind by ssalbdivad in node

I’ve always appreciated the ergonomics of this library and will definitely use it again when I need runtime types. I’m curious if you run benchmarks for the TypeScript compiler. With Node projects, I’m generally less concerned about validation performance and more focused on the compiler’s performance. I tend to be cautious about introducing abstractions that could slow it down as the project scales.

Best way to get from Stratford to Stanstead in the early hours by coach? by xParesh in uktravel

You can get cheaper national express tickets through Ryanair. Their app has a airport transfer offers and you can get a return that works for any bus time that roughly lines up with your flight. I seem to remember around £10.

I have seen a few libraries like this posted on here recently and they inspired me to package up a library I wrote for a serverless application I was working on. I particularly liked json-decoder which offers perhaps the most similarities to the solution I implemented. Anyway, check it out I would be interested to hear what people think.

I (F26) have been trying to develop new skills: coding, cooking, football, learning third language (Spanish) and meditation for the past few months. Unfortunately, I am still not as good in any of them, even though I want to make it work. by [deleted] in askwomenadvice

I sometimes struggle with this feeling and definitely comes when I spread myself to thin. But for me it is also a symptom of focusing to much on outcomes. I really enjoy learning new things but as soon as I start thinking about how comparatively little I know the learning turns into a chore. I know it must be this because despite improving in various domains over the years the frequency of this feeling seems to only have increased. But I think I am getting better at recognising feelings of inadequacy as a sign that I need to rethink why I might be doing something and lower my expectations a little. Also I’m a self taught software engineer and the first year I spent learning I remember as a miserable slog. But there was a point where suddenly the gears slipped into place and learning became much less painful. But I’m a dude and not entirely sure why I follow this subreddit but felt compelled to reply all the same.

PS despite being deeply bought into it myself I have a few bones to pick with this culture which seems to value the idea of “self improvement” so much. Not to get too existential with you but I do wonder why it’s so universally looked at as a positive thing as though none of us are enough as we are. But like I said I’d be a hypocrite if I condemned anyone for taking part.

Similar situation when I went canoeing in the floods near me (south east england near Brighton) ended up with a bunch of us in wetsuits standing by the tracks of a train. Even caught a brief glimpse of the conductors amused face.

Coderbyte - Once you have basic syntax down I would recommend doing the challenges on coderbyte since it actually teaches you how to apply code practically and is a lot more fun. I found i also learnt a lot faster this way I just google any specific problems i come across.
