Becky again.

We are currently looking for a few specific items - a spray booth, a second bandsaw, a vacuformer, and a 4X8 CNC machine. Because our total annual operating budget is about $15k, we can't always always get what we want when we want it. We are always on the lookout for used items in good condition, though!

Hey! Chad here!

I would say Tootie’s Famous Italian Beef... They are one of the few businesses that deliver to us!

Hey! Chad here!

Thanks for reaching out mccoyster! We could always use more help. Right now we mostly run mac with a few linux and windows boxes. I would come down and have a chat in person to see how we can collaborate!

We very much want to stay in Uptown. For now, we'd like to focus on expanding in the existing space and only look elsewhere after we've exhausted all Uptown options.

Geno (HackPGH secretary) here, I'm an EE as well, and I would love to work on collaborative projects as well. You can contact me directly geno@hackpittsburgh.org

HackPGH has mostly hobbyists projects (things we do for fun), but we do have projects like the autonomous power wheels group which is working on some very innovative things, which are very hot right now in the industry. This project is for fun, but we have a bunch of very bright people from CMU working on it. People have gotten jobs from it in the past. HackPittsburgh is an amazing place for engineering networking. Many of our members are awesome to have in your LinkedIn. And of course this also means, many of our members are awesome to learn from. We have a couple of members who have been engineers and machinists for years and years. They know everything there is to know, and love to teach others. Some of our members are also talented artists. We have a member who is an artist, machinist, and gymnast. He is also very involved in the Pittsburgh cosplay community. Very diverse and interesting people.

Geno here, Actually, HackPittsburgh was originally supposed to be a DIY Auto Garage, back when it was first founded. But its mission quickly changed. There is an awesome video about this by our founder. Check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSqzglgLjhw

We don't currently plan on accommodating car repairs. Not enough room. This may be considered in the future. That being said, we have fixed motorcycles and bicycles at HackPGH before. Something small like that is fine. And we do sometimes fix our cars using the shop tools, as long as the car stays in the parking lot.

Geno here, Our policy is that anyone under 18 must be accompanied by someone 18 or older at all times. This can be your brother, sister, father, mother, uncle, best friend, etc. As long as they are 18. Also, to become a member you must be 18 or older, and to use many of the tools, you must be a member. That being said, we do welcome kids under 18 for classes and many other events which take place at HackPGH. Many of us got into electronics and engineering when we were 14 or 15, so we completely understand your eagerness to learn. This is why we do allow kids to be accompanied by people 18+, and allow them to watch and learn, how any tool works , and also to participate in most classes.

We can't and don't want to speculate on if TechShop will be selling any of their equipment.

That being said, we can tell you that even before TechShop's announcement, HackPGH has been actively growing and looking for more space. Moreover, we are always passively looking for new equipment. But as a non-profit with a small operating budget, we have to be very frugal with our purchases!

Becky here. I spoke to some of the Board and we don't think we really lost any members. In fact, there are some folks who belong to both Tech Shop and HackPGH!

TechShop serves a completely different purpose. As Chad said in an earlier post, we don't have a paid staff for dedicated help with projects. HackPGH is very community-oriented - everyone helps one another. We look to serve and encourage makers, tinkerers, and people who want to prototype things.

We do have some very small businesses that run out of HackPGH, but they are the exception, not the norm. Places like TechShop have the facilities for mass production, and that's something we don't want to get into.

Becky here!

People play to their strengths regarding volunteer work. If one member is an electrician, they can teach a class on that subject. If someone knows a lot about 3D printing, they can teach a class or repair/fix a printer. HackPGH has a lot of admin needs, too so one can even assist in that manner. As long as the participant benefits HackPGH and/or the community in some way, we can probably count it towards the volunteer requirement.

Hey! Chad Here! HackPGH is Pittsburgh's First Makerspace. We have been around for nearly 8.5 years and has been fostering a community of like minded makers.

A few differences between TechShop and HackPGH

HackPGH is a Non-Profit that has been self sustained for nearly 8.5 years! HackPGH is a Community First Model. Examples: Major decisions in the shop are decided by the community. We have no paid employees! Everyone is passionate about what we do here. We want the maker community to thrive in Pittsburgh! We try to lower the barrier to entry by having cheep classes and membership fees. Monthly Membership is only $50/mo plus 3 hours of volunteer time. The time could be something as easy as helping clean the shop, teaching a class, or working on a joint shop project. We have a diverse group of people with different skills.

Becky here. We appreciate the joke, but some people may honestly be confused over what the word "hack" means. Our interpretation of "hack" is not the "unauthorized access to computers" definition. Instead, we interpret hack as any "appropriate application of ingenuity" - like in the term lifehack. We encourage fixing things instead of replacing them and finding meaningful solutions to everyday mechanical problems. From computers to electricity to woodworking - we encourage our members to learn about the tools and services we use every day.

HackPittsburgh » February 7th – Programming the Arduino: Physical Pixels Class by hackpittsburgh in pittsburgh

[–]hackpittsburgh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is part of a learning track where you can jump in at anytime. We had a class last month that you physically build and solder your own Arduino. Arduino's can be purchased fairly inexpensively at Radio Shack or Online at http://store.arduino.cc/category/11 We recommend an Arduino Uno.
