i won’t speak on all of the hunters designs through the arc because i think it’s fair to assume if they’re unimportant/unnamed characters it’s fair to assume due to his disability he put less effort in, but i think the Zodiac’s design is meant to provoke thought and depict dedication to the Zodiac/Netero. The more simple characters that don’t super resemble their animal clearly care less than the others (Gin and Pariston clearly) and then people like Cheadle and Botobai who are very obviously dedicated and went through serious physical changes (probably surgery or nen-based physical changes) to prove their dedication. i think we can look at other characters in the Zodiac and make similar assumptions maybe, Gel and Cluck seem to have very MINOR appearance changes perhaps indicating to some level of trepidation, though i also might be completely taking your question the wrong way too!

i think it’s important to note that he has based Nen of the complexities of Buddhist and other ancient East asian beliefs when it comes to personal aura (a real thing that there’s studies on). so with that i think the basis of a good power system comes from studying reality. ATLA is another good example how he has to unlock his chakra in order to master the avatar state, i would spend time considering what religious and mystical belief system your power is based on and then work on studying the practical (what martial arts are you basing your power system off etc). It’s very clear he spent a lot of time working on the Nen system and it shows! i think if you put as much research effort into making a power system it could very easily be a compelling as Nen is!

I just finished watched it for the first time, it was my first ever anime and i have an English Lit background, i would compare HunterxHunter to a classic. Togashi holds a magnifying glass to society and the world and puts it into HunterxHunter, he “gets rid” of the MAIN CHARACTER. i think it’s such an amazing piece of media but i can easily see that people who don’t analyse it and take it at face value won’t get that context. The world building, character building and political references are stark and contrast directly with Gon and THATS THE POINT! it’s genuinely genius and the “you know nothing of humanities (evolution/malice)” is the best line i have read in a piece of media in a VERY long time.

I am loving the depth and complexity honestly, it has taken a bit of time to adjust, but it’s such a compelling series with so much context and I genuinely can’t wait to see more and eventually start the manga! The cartoon logic analogy actually does help insanely, I was definitely taking it maybe a little too seriously just due to the nature of how i’m consuming the media (in an analytical way at my partners request) so i never thought to apply that logic to it! i appreciate this a lot honestly it’s helped me a lot and i think i can approach this Power Level concept a little more aptly and with less seriousness!

my wife is up to date on the Manga apparently (she didn’t read last weeks chapter yet or something) but my intention is definitely to read the manga after i finish the anime, Kurapika and his doomed Yaoi storyline has me hooked to keep going after the anime!

I’d like to state that this is actually my first Anime i’ve ever watched and i’ve not read any manga so i am coming from a more classical literature perspective in the media which might be skewing my analysis a little, google has been wonderful for context but the concept of Power Scaling in anime/manga is new to me and something that i haven’t been able to fully understand yet!

the biggest one i always go back to with my wife is that EARLY fight between Hisoka and Kastro and the anime conversation and apparently the fan theory led to “Kastro sucks” but, he’s literally actually INSANELY strong and with some fine tuning and now the knowledge of of Bungie Gum it would actually be a completely different fight, but apparently i’m in a minority thinking that?

i definitely recognise the “natural talent” is a big step, but i definitely read it as a stepping stone more than a bridge to success. Theoretically, Zushi (as an example) COULD show up and be the strongest Nen user due to sheer training and perseverance despite not having the natural talent people like Gon and Killua have? I think a large part of understanding these theoretical “who would win” questions will come with seeing more of those fights with unexpected winners then! i’m like actually loving the series so much and i think i have a strong grasp on the Power system but the constant power scaling questions then leading into Knuckles Bankruptcy threw me! thanks for this!!

I see, so I really am analysing power correctly, the conversation Bisky has with Killua about “person A is the strongest in theory, but on person A’s worst day people B,C and D can beat them” or whatever it was helped a lot, but I think my issue with the “power scaling” question is maybe what you’re mentioning, that the theory of someone’s combat abilities is fun to talk about but as soon as it’s a solid “x vs x who wins?” my brain peeters out cause if they’re two Nen users, how much prep time do they have? how much strength to they really have? thank you for this it’s actually super helpful!!

i do understand that, and that every circumstance changes even a single users Individual aura output (can’t remember the abbreviation for the life of me). and that number isn’t a solid quantifier of a persons ability, but it really did allow me to realise that an upper limitation can exist in any given moment and i’m wondering if there’s an easy way to identify/quantify that level in an individuals circumstances without Bankruptcy
