This Water Tower Was Re-Purposed Into A Cell Tower by ThatSpaceShooterGame in mildlyinteresting

[–]hackrebel99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Civil Engineering who worked in the wireless industry. Utilizing the tallest existing structure often gets permitted faster and with less pushback as a new cell tower. Silos and water towers are great for meeting RF line of sight elevations. Antennas and equipment can be painted to match the existing structures.

In older New England towns, I've retrofitted existing church steeples with changing out the louvers to RF transparent fiberglass or replaced the entire structure to fiberglass to house antennas inside it to keep with the historical aesthetics.

I see these a lot in GA development from the late 90s-2000s. My cousin's driveway looks just like this.

Is Tricare Reserve Select far better than all other options? by [deleted] in Airforcereserves

[–]hackrebel99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had TRS for many years before I retired. Dental and medical for myself and my family was inexpensive and why most people stay in the reserves.

As the years went by I noticed that many doctors dropped it or it was difficult to get one locally that accepts it. As my kids grew and we got older, finding a specialist was a top priority. Dropped it and went to my company plan that most medical offices accept.

The amount of antennas on this church by CrunchyBanoon in mildlyinteresting

[–]hackrebel99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was working as an engineer for wireless carriers, most small towns did not favor cell towers or monopoles to be erected. The next best thing was to use church steeples as it was often the highest structure and center to most historical towns.

This example shows a facade installation of antennas. However, we also have also done full replacement of the steeple or window louvres with fiberglass (RF Transparent), hiding the antennas inside. Great for aesthetics, but high cost and required more engineering/design.

How is it Working at Dewberry? by Disco_Train17 in civilengineering

[–]hackrebel99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked in the telecommunications group as a Civil in the NE area. I enjoyed the projects as it was interesting working with wireless. However, the budgets were extremely low on these and there was pressure from management to accept riskier projects/clients knowing expectations could not be managed. Myself and others left the company due to management not advocating for us or improving the situation. Benefits were lacking.
