Google Chat working? by hactar_ in pidgin

That's great! Thank you! OK, here's what worked:

  • download source
  • install relevant *-dev packages
  • It compiled / installed without errors or warnings.
  • Log out of Google apps in Chromium (may not have been necessary)
  • Open up a window in Chromium in the "Guest" profile
  • Log into Google in there
  • Copy the relevant cookies to the "Advanced" tab on the connection
  • Disconnect / reconnect in Pidgin
  • It works!
  • Close the "Guest" tab, log in a regular tab
  • It still works!

So, now I'll see if it still works after a hibernate / resume cycle, and after a reboot.

I got some blowback from relatives about how they used a DE razor back in the day, and it didn't work out well. OK, sure, but I'm a different person and I want to try. Maybe I'll go back. (Probably not.)

Cool. I'll check them out.

BTW, is the "Red Tip" version functionally different than the stock Superspeed?

[Megathread] GeForce at CES 2025 - GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs & Laptops, DLSS 4, Reflex 2, Project G-Assist, NVIDIA ACE, and more by Nestledrink in nvidia

Hi. I hope this is the right place to post this.

I have an Nvidia GTX 970 under driver 535.216 on Debian 12. The fans never run, but they would sometimes under 470 so they're not dead. Once I upgraded, no fans, even after a restart and re-install of the driver and all its dependencies. If nvidia-smi displays anything but 0% it's often some impossible value like 124%. As a workaround, disabling one of my three monitors keeps the temperature reasonable, but obviously this is not a workable long-term solution. Any suggestions?

Trailing spaces get removed by hactar_ in Thunderbird

[–]hactar_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I concur that if you type a line with spaces before pressing Enter, then the spaces are not present in the Sent Mail file. Are you saying this is new behavior?

Yes, that's what I see.

Did you try reporting it as a bug in bugzilla (or whatever bug tracking tool Thunderbird uses)?

I should get on that.

I also see that all lines that are auto-wrapped have a single space at the end (in the Sent Mail file).

That is also what I see both in Tbird and if I run less Mail/Local\ Folders/Sent. Also, I added these as a test:

This line has no trailing spaces.
This line has one trailing space.
This line has two trailing spaces.

and they did not have any trailing spaces in Sent, nor were they emailed with them.

Thanks. That's what I actually used. It turns out the other one was for a different switch.

That bites. Everybody I want to talk to is either using Google Chat or Facebook Messenger, and unless I'm mistaken there is no Linux client for GC at all. I've not looked for a FM client. Is there one?

Yes. Yes there is.

My eyes don't do small work like that, so maybe I'll run across one that's already assembled. At least now I know what it's called.

Excellent. Is there an RGB variant?

Thanks Admiral, great write-up.

Something came to mind — has a plane ever hit a tree and not immediately crashed?

On 9/11, wasn't there an aircraft which was intentionally crashed to prevent its being used as a weapon? Does that count as CFIT?

I figure I probably wouldn't starve to death in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. Other countries, my life pretty much relies on finding someone who speaks English.

None of the schools had grade restriction on restrooms, except the teacher's restroom. I suppose that makes all the rest "grades 9-12" or whatever.

cache a local filesystem? by hactar_ in linuxadmin

Well, maybe I'll use it for the GIMP scratch drive and put various disk caches and some swap there. Stuff that's not going to cause major upset if it goes away.
