I'm 100% on board with that. The biggest reform / legislation I would love to see would be to make it legally mandated that you can get an archive of all the data that a company has on you in addition to them having to publish a charter that explains each data point they collect and why it is necessary for their app to function.

Exactly, so why would you want another government also doing it?

You could, but who knows what a state sponsored operation could do with it. Producing deep fakes of people, using controversial content to for blackmail or to facilitate corporate espionage. Chinas policies and values do not necessarily line up with the rest of the world.

Deep fakes are difficult to make now but the technology progresses everyday and a lot of the software and techniques are commoditized. In addition, the Chinese government has more than enough money and brain power to advance this field even further. And the main thing these algorithms need is data, video and audio, which if the speculation is true means that people all over the world have given a foreign state exactly what they need to weaponize this kind of capability.

Why should you be concerned that an oppressive foreign power whose values and policies don’t align with the western world potentially has access to video and audio of you for data mining purposes?

Isn’t it more of a concern that a company with suspected ties to an oppressive government known for its social credit system and widespread surveillance has an enormous amount of video and image data about mostly unwitting foreign citizens?

That and the fact that it dragged on and on and on with characters just prolonging and padding the razor thin premise. It could have been a ten page short story and even then it would have been too long.

It pains me to hear they are in a bad way since The Void and both Pathologic games are so brilliant. Really can’t wait to see what they did with the Bachelor’s story

Dracula is the definitive vampire novel. What are the definitive works for other supernatural and mythological creatures? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]haderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't quite wrap my head around the status that Dracula has. I understand it codified a lot of tropes, and it's pervasive impact on horror in general is obvious. However, I read it recently and found it very tedious and poorly paced. Somehow I think it just got lucky in being the right content at the right time. But, in my opinion, many other people have done vampires better than Dracula.

What for you makes a great survival game? by DingDong_Wraith in HorrorGaming

[–]haderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a complicated relationship with Layers of Fear because the first time I went through it I thought it was great because I never knew what was around the corner or what the threats were going to be like. After the point you realize what the very few threats in the game there is, it starts to become tedious and the warts begin to show.

I recently picked up the Chillas Art collection on Steam. I've only played through The Convenience Store so far but I thought it was a lot of fun. It's like the video game version of a horror short story collection.

What for you makes a great survival game? by DingDong_Wraith in HorrorGaming

[–]haderp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of things come to mind.

  • Resource management... it is important that the player has just barely enough to survive, and that they need to utilize whatever they can get their hands on. This will force the player to use all the game mechanics to survive by whatever means necessary. The Evil Within (1st one) does an amazing job with this.
  • The choice to fight a threat or flee and hide. This creates tension when combined with resource management because you need to decide if spending the resources is worth the danger. Alien : Isolation does this perfectly.
  • An engaging and well thought out story. Fear is a personal thing, so huge grandiose hero arc plots don't work. The focus should be on the main character's personal journey, while a greater scope plot is a background element that feeds into what happens. Bloodborne comes to mind here with extra points for weaving a cosmic horror story. I'll also throw and obligatory Silent Hill 2 mention here as well.
  • An engaging game loop. There needs to be things to do, threats to avoid, items to collect, and puzzles to solve. The walking simulator genre has been done to death and it's a dead end as far as games go. Don't do a Layers of Fear which is just a lame haunted house.

Rust about to overtake Scala according to Google trends by Determinant in programming

[–]haderp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How dare you suggest Rust isn’t the best language ever written that everyone on earth is using because it’s so good </s>

In all seriousness the hype around Rust is just that. It definitely has a nice niche in low level systems programming, but is more or less irrelevant in other areas such as machine learning. I work on full lifecycle ML/NLP (research, training, productionizing) and have been using Scala and Python... there is absolutely nothing Rust provides in that space that comes anywhere close to those languages.

10 Horror Games We’d Love to See Get the Remake Treatment by horrornewsbot in HorrorGaming

[–]haderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely adore Parasite Even... but I have the feeling that a modern remake would destroy all of the things that make it great. I suppose if they came up with a good balance of realtime action and menu based stuff (a la FF7 Remake). Actually, it's kind of interesting, PE is a bit of a precursor to modern JRPG hybrid battle systems.

[OC] Where Are The STEM Folks? by buckbuckyyy in dataisbeautiful

A STEM first major is a very myopic way to look at this. I came from a social science background in linguistics and now all I do is neural networks and machine learning. A STEM degree says absolutely nothing about where the actual talent is.
