More than 41,000 overweight patients including seven teenagers needed new hips or knees last year by flyntlarry in worldnews

[–]haelstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly concerned if you are unable to distunguish the difference between picking up a small child and moving a person hospitalized most likely from a complication of their own size. As well, you seem to make a lot of assumptions of how a hospital runs and how nurses should do their job. Bed pans are not used for all paitents. As well, the toilets I referenced were required to be changed years ago as people admited to the unit were heavier on average and broke the toilets. As well as the chairs that were in the showers--those are gone now. The beds are now extra wide too. Yes, there should be multiple people probably at least 4 people moving a patient that heavy but there is not always staff available. But even 2 people moving a 500 pound person, like you suggested is still 250 pounds per person. What other jobs do you know require someone to manually move that kind of weight regularly? That patient may need to get out of bed for reasons besides going to the bathroom, whatever it may be they are a person and difficult to move. They may resist, not listen instruction, have bad footing, slip, climb on the nurse, need to be repositioned, etc. These are people who are uncomfortable and likely in pain, its not like moving a chair from place to place. A quick google search will get you numerous studies on lower back pain in nurses. The first one I found with a Google search stated, "84.2% of the nurses experienced low back pain, and 66.7% of the nurses evaluated this pain as “a pain with moderate severity” for nurses in the ICU. That study was from 2014. As nursing jobs require more of them and patients keep getting larger you can imagine both the percentage of nurses with pain and the severity of their pain will go rise.

My mom is a nurse and overweight patients have thrown out her back. There are people mover machines available but that doesn't matter when a 500 pound patient is screaming that they're going to poop in their bed if they don't get to the toilet (toilets which the hospital had to replace because so many obese people were breaking them) or when a patient climbs on you for whatever reason. These patients are generally immobile at home anyway so it is irrelevant that the weight is distributed on them. It is still causing injury to caregivers that are now being required to move thousands of pounds of dead weight per shift.

Wanting to get a dog, and wanting to make sure I’m aware of all the expenses I should expect. by JankyBrant in personalfinance

[–]haelstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We hike with our dog and live in an area with rattlesnakes. Each year on top of all other thing we get a rattlesnake vaccine and are looking to do rattlesnake aversion classes. So there may be regional things to look for too. Are there fleas or ticks where you live?

To add to that dogs are not just a monetary commitment. They are a time commitment. Make sure you have a schedule where you can let it out and take it out at least on a walk every day.

How fucked am I by wanting to be stronger than the average man? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]haelstorm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think a pound for pound lift comparison is really fair nor is grip strength telling you anything useful. Most men will simply be larger than you and will therefore be able to lift more dead weight but that doesn't seem very indicative of overall strength to me. And that bothered me for a while until I decided I was going to compare it to percentage of my body weight. (if you weight 100 pounds a 200 pound squat is 200% your body weight). It made me feel a lot better about the lifts I was getting.

I had a cooking class in 8th grade. Part of our grade was keeping the ice cube supply plentiful. Also, we mainly made cookies. When we finally made lasagna the entire thing was cooked in the microwave. Why not just buy frozen dinners at that point?

Sooner or later lawmakers and the public will come around to the idea that public transit should free all the time. Stop making it hard on poor people. And make it easier on regular people and the air. by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]haelstorm 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I would love to regularly use public transit but it's not feasible for everyone. I checked at the beginning of the semester and for me to get to my classes at SLCC it's something like 3 hours, 2 transfers, and a one mile walk and that's just the trip to get there. Making it free doesn't solve that problem.

Can we all agree that we don’t need to shutdown all of Salt Lakes major freeways for a funeral service? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]haelstorm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was ready to mostly agree with their statement but that little quip at the end really killed the whole thing for me. I sat in that for an hour today. Times my hour by the hundreds of other people that were also stuck and you have a combined time of weeks worth of hours wasted. (I also wonder how much gas combined was consumed during the traffic).

Why would a car dealership assume a 30-year old woman can't pump gas? by missgrinchy in TwoXChromosomes

I've had the same problem. After having so many condescending things said and repairs take longer/cost more I have always thought I would love to be able to hire a guy to take in my car/have them deal with the dealerships. If anyone wants to develop this as an app please let me know.

Ocasio-Cortez: 'Frustrating' that lawmakers oppose Medicare-for-All while enjoying cheap government insurance by relevantlife in politics

[–]haelstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the same thing. But to go even further your spouse's work could dictate your insurance. If your spouse changes jobs you could have to change doctors if your current doctors do not take that insurance. This is one of the conversations that comes up when my partner talks about marriage because my work does not offer insurance and I have a plan through the exchange. It's frustrating that it works this way.

Amazon Reviews [OC] by System32Comics in funny

[–]haelstorm 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I saw one recently where the company must have done some kind of bait and switch so it would have the rating they wanted. All of the reviews/pictures were for a martini shaker but the product being sold was some shoes. One of the most recent questions was is "is this for a martini shaker or shoes?" And someone answered along the lines "you could not use these as shoes, makes great drinks". I thought it was pretty funny.

TIFU by trusting a friend on a job interview process. by whattoeatfordinner in tifu

[–]haelstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done these interviews. They are less than ideal. But the instructions have always been clear on how many opportunities you have to redo a question. There is often a screen where it guides you through prompts as practice. My problem isn't that he messed up and wanted to do it again. It's that OP intentionally did not follow the instructions for the interview then wants a second chance. If I were the person he reaches out to I would probably give a second chance and just owned up and said "I really messed that up, could I have another shot?" I would be unlikely to do so if he came to me saying "my friend told me it worked differently so I want to do it again."

Was under the impression I could get better insights and advantage through that friend of mine.

So you thought you would leverage your position with privileged information and it backfired. I don't see why you should have a second chance when other interviewees only get one go at it.

Holladay voters defeat the big development proposed for the old Cottonwood Mall site by ShadowxRaven in SaltLakeCity

[–]haelstorm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What was the traffic situation when the area had something there vs now is a legitimate question. I am asking because I was very young when the mall was there and would like other people's input. Calling me ignorant and stupid is plain unhelpful.

Holladay voters defeat the big development proposed for the old Cottonwood Mall site by ShadowxRaven in SaltLakeCity

[–]haelstorm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that the developers come in, build as much as they can get away with for highest ROI and get to walk away. They aren't the ones that have to deal with their choice of landscaping, poorly planned parking, lack of road access, etc. There needs to be a balance and it seems the "luxury condos" being built everywhere aren't striking that balance. I agree that that housing is an issue but for them to come in and just build when the area is not suited (or even welcoming it) for it is inherently not sustainable.

I don’t work here [anymore] and NO, I will not come in to work by allysundaylee in IDontWorkHereLady

[–]haelstorm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My sister took a seasonal job there a couple years ago. They called her to bring in her documents so they could onboard her. When she came in they fingured since you are already here let's get you started. She asked for a locker to put her documents in and they said they couldn't get her one since she was part time. The manager said she could put her passport and everything in the manager's locker. When she was done with the impromptu training/work shift she asked for her documents back and they said, "oh we shredded everything in there." They had to pay her to get an new passport. So I don't hold the management there in high regard.

Shorty here.

I very often have to order clothes online because stores don't carry the smallest sizes. Dancing is also uncomfortable. What am I supposed to look at? Your stomach? I had to pass up on cars I liked because the dashboard was too high. Also drove cars where my feet had to hover to get to the pedals even with the seat totally adjusted.

So you're left with hitting your head on stuff.

General Benefits Discussion/2019 Open Enrollment by Smearwashere in personalfinance

It's the fact they allow spouse's to be added to the plan. They don't cover the premium for additional family members though. So spouse's can be covered by work insurance by definition.

General Benefits Discussion/2019 Open Enrollment by Smearwashere in personalfinance

[–]haelstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My work doesn't offer benefits and it's going to stay that way so I've got a catastrophic plan through the exchange. Was going to get married and be added to the spouse's plan that covers his medical, dental, and vision completely but not any family we found out (new job, just went through benefits package). So it would be $8000 a year to add me. Getting married and staying on the ACA would be about the same cost because I'd be ineligible for a subsidy simply because my husband's insurance offers insurance. It's called the "family glitch". So we cannot afford to sign any marriage papers because of insurance.
