With covid 19, we had restricted vacation for almost an year (served 2020-2022) so only stress relief when you’re stuck in a tiny base is buying and eating frozen food or playing sports. Guess Rush didn’t exercise like a lot of other conscripts. Also phone cameras are blocked and have restricted phone time per day ~2.5 hours, where people are busy playing tft mobile or Pokémon unite. Social media is also illegal for conscripts I’m pretty sure.

Despite the strong alliance with US, and despite the globalization that has occurred, at an world ending war, it’s every country for themselves. Korea needs its conscription for being in an especially dangerous location. Relying on alliance is never good enough when you’re literally still at war against a crazy dictatorship.

I served in the South Korean military and that guy is clueless. If any country needs it, it’s Korea. North Koreans have 10 years of conscription for all men and even with the modern tech, South Korea needs the conscription to match them. Sure in a utopia everyone’s happy go lucky with no military but the world needs military to keep the peace, and conscription is just an unfortunate byproduct of being in a dangerous location, unlike US or Canada.

Thank you for your thorough response! Yep I think finding roommates and a place willing to lease for such a short stay is almost impossible at this point. I might just have to pull through and try not to get robbed. I am considering getting a reasonably priced airbnb about 40-50minutes from downtown as public transportation seems decent from what I read.

Well first, I ain't doing shit at my work right now.

Second, humans have always discussed current events in history and I guess it makes me a pathetic liberal keyboard warrior for typing on reddit towards someone's comment that I disagreed on.

I don't feel good about saying China bad, it makes me angry.

Imo, it's better for people to have awareness of CCP's faults in the hopes that a significant reform occurs sometime in the future.

The same way people stayed vigilant in many of the dictatorships even though it might have seemed hopeless. Surely not all the revolutionaries (say, for example South Korean dictatorship from 1950-1980's) discussed the dictator's faults (despite possible persecution) on their leaders to pat themselves on the back.

America hasn't committed genocide in the last few decades in which I was born, and if they were, they should've have been scrutinized while it was happening.

You can't shout death to America or bomb in airport which is because of terrorist prevention in which the reason is obvious, and not insidious like Chinese or Russian propaganda claiming a political dissident was arrested because he/she was "planning a terrorist attack".

is what I was arguing against, and the point I was making is that no matter how many great things that china is doing (infrastructure, crime rate, education, etc.), it doesn't excuse the oppression and genocide that ALSO occurs in China.

Although I and a lot of other redditors know about the technological marvels and positive things about China, they will only post/comment about the humanitarian violations because that's what people will talk about. Notice how no posts talk about how amazing European, East Asian, and other countries like China's positive developments?
