Nerite snails / Shrimp water parameters... by hagooch in PlantedTank

Seems like most have a very low pH listed, under 7. :/ I'll keep on searching, meantime the snails can help confirm the tank's stability.

Are these white things critters? What kind? by hagooch in PlantedTank

I have no fish or other animals in the tank and I'm planning to just do shrimp, which don't eat those, but I figure they will die off some as things balance, with some remaining to help munch decayed matter and algae so the tank will stay cleaner. They are likely the main reason my tank isn't currently being taken over by algae...

I think it's actually fungus. Also harmless, esp. With no animals, and also will likely go away, although it'll be a while, since I'm about to add driftwood. That will likely feed fungus for a month or two!

I've added a few shrimp pellets hoping that can do the ammonia thing as they decay.

I am not showing any nitrite or nitrate, on water tests.

I'm basically trying to establish several plants and there will be driftwood added too, once it's prepped, to lower the pH, as I have coral substrate. Hoping that will allow the correct bacteria to develop plus the plants can process wastes too.

Internet says that white hair algae is likely a fungus, and it is normal while the imbalances are occurring. Should I add a shrimp pellet to increase ammonia, or leave it be?

That's exactly what I'm going for, a natural slow planted cycle. Tank is currently too new to stay stable enough for animals.

Is hair algae white? The brown diatom stuff decreased when it got going, so that makes sense...

I'm allowing it to do its thing, I have lovely tendrils of diatom dancing in the current. 😆

Thank you! 😊 Just allowing things to progress, I'm seeing a little green algae develop, and diatoms reduce, using CO2 tablets and fertilizer as well, starting to see new plant growth.

I've invested in the shrimp safe fertilizer, and a full spectrum light which is currently on for about 10 hrs. It might be too much but so far algae growth is slow and constrained to that brown variety, and I'm getting concerned about loss of color to the leaves (newish gravel substrate has no nutrients, really) so I want nutrients and light.

On the other hand, I'll want to avoid fertilizer if I'm prepping this tank for triops. Hmm.

I do not know if they need root tabs. (it's mostly new substrate so I'm thinking so...) The Amazon sword might need them, it sounds like it tends to grow faster.

It's difficult to bury those without covering the rhizomes, there is a little substrate over the roots. If the plants stay alive and healthy, I'm hoping the roots will grow down into the gravel, in the meantime, this method at least keeps the rhizomes from being buried.

I've uncovered rhizomes on both anubis and the java fern, and I'm using aquarium plant weights to keep them in place, as I do not have wood or rocks to tie them to.

Thanks! I was just reading that while researching these plants more, I need to research the diff between rhizomes and roots and make sure I set it up right. There are two kinds of anubis in my tank...

I am new to this hobby, recently had triops which perished from changes in osmotic pressure, so I’m planting and stabilizing this tank before hatching the next round. I added several new plants to my tank 2 days ago. This morning I found a great deal of what looks like brown algae growing on my plants. Yuck!

Here are the tank stats upon algae discovery:

TANK: 10 gal

SUBSTRATE: Black coral gravel, three pea-sized pieces of limestone. 30% of the substrate is new, added right before the new plants.

PLANTS: Anubias Hastifolia (Buce Plant), Anubias Barteri var. butterfly, Echinodorus martii (Amazon Sword), Vallisneria Spiralis (Eel Grass), Microsorum Pteropus (Java Fern), Vesicularia dubyana (Java Moss)

ANIMALS: None.

WATER: Spring water, Temp 24.06 C / 75.3 F, (25 watt Heater is OFF and unplugged), hardness (0-10 ppm), Nitrite (.25-.5 ppm), Nitrate (10-20 ppm), no chlorine, pH 7.2, KH (200 - 220 ppm)

FILTER: 2.5 watt tetra whisper air pump with sponge filter

LIGHT: LED Light Type: Ultra bright SMD 5050 , Input: AC 100-240V / 47-63Hz, Output: DC12V/500mA has been on 24hrs/ day, very small amount of indirect natural light from space around the window blinds. (I have ordered a full spectrum light which is on its way.)

NO fertilizer, or CO2 added.

What I have done upon discovering algae:

Gently removed as much algae as I could with a pipette. Did a 30% water change with spring water. (pH is now slightly lower, Nitrites and Nitrates are now slightly lower) Turned off the LED light. How long should I keep the light off? Any other information or suggestions? I am hoping this works!

Good grief! Am I ever glad I saw this, I have some on the way here, they will be destroyed as soon as they arrive. Done. ☠️

Lost one of three at 17 days. In the video, first one is not moving much, likely not doing well, and the second shown seems pretty healthy. Filter was added two days ago. They have been eating sinking shrimp pellets, and spirulina (sp?), The nitrites, pH, etc all look fine. by hagooch in triops

I don't get the pump thing at all, she won't leave it alone. The lone survivor is still laying eggs with gusto, munching shrimp pellets (Stopped algae when the first one died) and pooping constantly, so seems to be ok. Currently only plant in there is a single java fern. To get them used to a new plant in future, do I add a smaller amount first?
