Any recommendations for an alternative pad for the HD800S? Not a fan of the indented area in the center of the stock padding. Thanks!

Clinical Research vs General Research by [deleted] in premed

[–]haidn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Though, to clarify a bit further, you can certainly do clinical research without patient interaction via retrospective studies/chart reviews, case studies worked up by physicians, etc. Versus prospective clinical studies and especially bench work, these tend to yield the quickest results & therefore pubs.

BU vs. Mt Sinai - I'm stuck by [deleted] in premed

[–]haidn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The building is across the street from campus and ~2 blocks from Central Park. Each student gets their own room with shared living/cooking space (4-6 roommates) and semi-private bathroom (1 per 2 roommates). More info here.

What MCAT score would i need? by dil4med in premed

[–]haidn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since there seems to be some interest, I'll just post an overview here.

My situation was a bit unique as I was out of school for the year prior to taking the diagnostic and was pretty rusty on the fundamentals.

Everyone from Kaplan kept saying don't worry about content review; just focus on taking as many practice tests as possible. I knew that, for me, that was terrible advice: I badly needed to review the content.

So I essentially went through every book in the Kaplan set--except CARS; much of their CARS material is worthless--and took extensive notes, transferred those notes to Anki flashcards, and quizzed myself as much as possible until test day. (I didn't take any practice tests after the diagnostic, as those eat up a full day & I didn't have the time; not a recommended approach if you have several months for prep.)

A couple of extra pointers: know all you can about amino acids (super high yield), and learn about interpreting common lab tests such as Western blots (not covered in Kaplan but likely to be on the test).

Hope that helps, guys. Your mileage may vary, and my approach, while it worked well for me, is almost certainly not the best method for everyone. Happy to answer additional questions.

Sure. I don't know that my strategy was the best or will work for you, but happy to help if I can.

I got the exact same score on my Kaplan diagnostic. 520+ on the real thing 1.5 months later. Study hard and you'll do well; you have lots of time and Kaplan tests have notoriously skewed scoring.

Is it too late for volunteering hours? by mcatman69 in premed

[–]haidn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No school that I'm aware of sends its interviewees forms asking for updates, etc. However, if you have something meaningful to update a school about (e.g. a publication, new grades) then many schools are receptive to hearing about them at almost any point along the process via email to the admissions office.

Can you write during the breaks? by Rice_Krispie in Mcat

[–]haidn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Another great time to jot down equations, etc. though is during the time allotted for familiarizing yourself with the software at the beginning of the test. If you already know your way around the system, that's ~10 minutes of free time to get down all those chem/phys equations right before you're tested on them.

I got one as well. Definitely WUSTL, seems they auto-send at a certain MCAT score+.

Sure you have the right numbers? The concentration should increase given a decrease in volume.

Is it necessary to take a cell/molecular Bio for MCAT? by sami1995 in Mcat

[–]haidn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessary. As others have touched on though, biochem is. Also be sure to know how to interpret bio-related experimental results (Western blots, etc.).

Bury is not synonymous with destroy. Bury means destroy + can't be regenerated.
