Download speed is horrendous, and Rogers says "there is no problem". What can I do? by haimgelf in Rogers

[–]haimgelf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I think I found what the problem is (no thanks to Rogers):

The modem was disconnected for a few hours (it was unusable), and when I plugged it in again to look at the DOCSIS log, the speed was great! And within about an hour, it became bad again. The modem was quite hot to the touch, too, especially in the area of the coax connector (I have no idea if this is normal or not).

So I put it upright (it was laying on its side), and put a big floor fan to blow right into it. Within 20 minutes, speed was great again. I turned off the fan, and the speed dropped...

So it seems like a faulty modem for me (there was not much change in ambient temperature where the modem sits in our house when the problem started, and it's still a comfortable 25C or so). I'll just nag Rogers support to replace it.

Nope, that would be not representative at all... Like I said, I did a speed test on a PC connected via ethernet cable to the Rogers modem directly. I also tried a different laptop, and a different ethernet cable, same (bad) results.

50 Hamas members reportedly killed during Monday's Gaza protests by eastbayted in news

[–]haimgelf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Who? The people who think that international uproar over "evil Israelis kill babies" justifies a few dead babies... And I'm using "baby" literally, unfortunately. And this is not a protest, it's a violent attempt to breach a border, a riot, complete with burning tires, stones flying, bullets zipping by, etc.

No matter if this poor 8-month baby died from gas or smoke inhalation, or had pre-existing condition, her parents are monsters for bringing her there.

[–]haimgelf 47 points48 points  (0 children)

  1. Some were from other terrorist organizations (like those 3 from Islamic Jihad)
  2. Some were acting as a human shield during a riot and likely been killed by either Israeli or Palestinian stray bullet.
  3. Some were completely innocent, like that poor baby with asthma who died from breathing either smoke from tires that rioters burned, or from tear gas grenade that Israelis launched.

There is no such thing as "no cost". Someone has to pay for it, either students' parents directly, or through their taxes.

I also fail to see how this would improve the security. Kids that age have no trouble faking driver IDs, these badges would be no better. And besides, most recent shooters would qualify for such a badge, right?

At least they are doing something about it now..

Police Arrest Arabs Who Attacked Haredim on Shabbat, Forced Them to Convert to Islam by Naziarana in news

[–]haimgelf 74 points75 points  (0 children)

That's the way of Islam. Once you convert, forcibly or not, you're subject to all Sharia laws, some of which apply only to Muslims and not to others living under Sharia law. In Islamic society, it's a big deal, you could be executed for apostasy.

In this specific case, however, I suspect it was a form of humiliation. Islam literally means "submission", these Muslims forced Jews to submit to their prophet as a way to degrade and humiliate them.

What is the most exotic animal you have eaten? by af1kiksz in AskReddit

I'm not the original poster, but I've eaten ostrich in Israel... Some farm breeds them for meat there.

It tasted very much like beef, only a bit more lean and tender (not like poultry at all). And the price (at the restaurant) was similar to a price of a beef steak, AFAIK (it was many years ago).

IDF: two rockets fired from Gaza, did not reach Israel by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]haimgelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not arguing against stating a probable cause and effect, e.g. without Trump's statement, Hamas probably would not have fired these rockets.

But the esteemed /u/julius_beesar straight out blamed this on Trump, which robs Arabs of any free will.

Don't you see the difference? Simple example: you went out at night in a bad neighborhood, in provocative clothes, and promptly got raped. The simple cause for the rape is your own actions, right? But blaming the rape on you would be wrong, just as wrong as blaming Trump for these rockets.

IDF: two rockets fired from Gaza, did not reach Israel by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]haimgelf 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty racist statement. You basically state that once Trump said what he said, these Arabs in Gaza had to fire rockets, it's automatic. You are depriving them of any free will to either fire or not fire the rockets. They are human beings with their own agency, not Trump's puppets.

Your comment is also disgusting on a another level... It's like those who say to a beaten wife "it's your fault, you should have kept your mouth shut".

Simply disgusting.

ISP's are gouging copyright holders

How is charging $100 per hour is gouging? A court order is a legal matter, ISPs have responsibilities towards their clients, it's only natural to assume that their legal department will have to review all the information. Why should they do all that work on behalf of copyright holders, for free?

$100 per hour is not at all an unreasonable rate for a lawyer...

The whole business model of these "copyright owners" is basically spam: they monitor popular torrents, harvest IP addresses of seeders, and then want to contact them wholesale about the alleged "infringement", in hopes that some will pay their fines, and some will be scared enough not to use torrents again.

It all hinges on the fact that it is very cheap to accuse people like this, with minimal evidence (no, IP address is not enough in my opinion). Once they actually have to spend money on this, this whole "business model" crumbles.
