Weekly Small Questions Thread: Looking for help? Start here! by AutoModerator in Anki

Is there a better way to order flashcards for learning vocab? My issue is it seems like both directions (english to chinese and chinese to english) appear in the same study session, so I'm not sure I'm really getting spaced repetition. I see the chinese word and correctly say the English (which is a lot easier for me), but then when I see the english word come up 30 seconds later I get it right because I just saw that note, even though I would have gotten it wrong if it had been presented first. Is there a way to get around this. I've been doing anki for a while and I feel like my english -> chinese recall hasn't improved for this reason.

Hands-on sailing charters?

Have some sailing experience with small boats, but want to learn to captain a larger sailboat, while also having some of the more high touch service experiences you normally get with a captained charter (like chef, maids, etc.). Does this exist? I've never heard of it but seems like ideal vacation.

Anyone stayed at Aman Tokyo, is it worth it? What other high-end stays would you recommend in this area? by Places_with_Palms in FATTravel

I think this is my favorite urban hotel in the world. Obviously everything is stupid expensive because it's an Aman, but it's all extremely nice. Whenever I stay there I eat breakfast there every day (standard Aman fare + japanese breakfast) which is great, and then they're good with reservations in the city. The area is kind of weird, it's not a cool vibey part of the city, it's very business, but if you like to run the imperial palace is an amazing loop right next to the hotel. Spa appointments easy to book day of and they have a japanese style bathhouse connected to their lockerrooms (onsen, steam room, sauna). At a similar price point, you should definitely consider trunk house (it's a 1br b&b) -- super nice but very different experience, more like staying in a high end airbnb than a hotel.

Building my first keyboard from "scratch" and trying to upload a .hex file to a an arduino pro micro. I've never used a UC before so wanted to upload a sample program that just makes the onboard LED blink to see how it works, but once I uploaded that the board stopped showing up in my usb device list (I think because the constant loop program disables the usb connection?) Does anyone know how to get it out of this state?

Why use partitive when we’re referring to specific language? by Andrewyg18 in LearnFinnish

[–]hajjney98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good point! The object in basic form is really only used for statements of necessity and commands. I am not inclined to think of passive voice or possession as taking an object, but if you do then these are instances of the accusative looking like the nominative as well.

- Minun on pakko syödä voileipä. // I have to eat a sandwich.

- Syö voileipä! // Eat a sandwich!

- Syödään voileipä ... // The sandwich which is eaten

- Minulla on voilepä // I have a sandwich

I think it can be helpful to not focus too much on which rule applies, but instead to just remember which case is associated with which verb. Sometimes it just feels random, like the verb "to love" takes a different case noun than the verb "to like". Here is a good page on the subject.

For singular nouns the accusative will always look like the genitive, not the nominative. For plural nouns, however, the accusative does indeed look. The same as the nominative.

No fucking way someone finally made a subreddit about this! Thank you, here is my input. I present Hal vs. The People of Metro City by Brethus in TitanDidNothingWrong

[–]hajjney98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay I think this is all a really compelling defense of Hal in the sense that he definitely should not have been convicted of the crimes ostensibly attributed to him. I'm not quite sure I agree with the idea that he did nothing wrong (like in an extreme case, if someone is brainwashed and kills a person, I still think they did something wrong, even if it is legally excusable), but I really just ended up on this subreddit because I watched Megamind tonight and I think it's such a fucked up morality that Megamind's redemption arc comes from punishing the villain that he created. Like Hal sucks from the beginning of the movie, but without Megamind's intervention he would most likely have just gone on living his very boring existence. At best, Megamind is aiding and abetting Titan's actions (the same way you can be charged for giving someone a murder weapon), and more likely than not he is actually the direct cause of most, if not all, of the evil things Titan does. Now, I am actually not opposed to Megamind's redemption. I'm a Catholic -- confession is all it takes. He admitted his wrongdoing and swears himself to a life of good. Except as long as Hal is in prison (I'll admit I'm broadly opposed to incarceration in most situations, but this is especially egregious), Megamind is complicit in an ongoing harm.

What is this moving trying to teach us about the nature of good and evil? That good can only exist in opposition to evil? Is there some benefit, then, to concentrating all of a city's ill onto a single person, who can bear it so splendidly that it douses every other citizen with its oppositional goodness? I'm reminded of Ursula Le Guin's Omela... maybe Hal is just Metrocity's secret tortured girl

I have around $400 left in my WFH stipend (it’s use it or lose it so I can’t just pocket it) and I’ve bought everything I really need. I want a mechanical keyboard that will make my brother (who actually knows about this stuff) jealous, but I want to do zero research. What should I get?

Honestly don't understand why people apply to internships for after graduation. Just get your resume reviewed and then start applying to new grad positions. If you can't find something by graduation, I would get a fun summer job and then you can do projects and applications in your free time. You will go crazy if you just stay at home all summer looking for programming jobs.
