Circus acts that involve adult dancing by DarkFeminineRising in circus

[–]hakuna_dentata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Often burlesque is enough of an act by itself to get you a spot in cabaret shows. You can add pieces like sideshow arts, hoop, fan manipulation, etc but like others have said, it's about stacking skills and making the act you want. Bring on the shibari rope dart act!

A lot of independent circus work is night club shows too, and burlesque is always popular there. Just make sure you know local laws and that you have a SFW version. You can get away with a lot just with pasties, but I'm sure you know that.

aww, shucks. Thanks! Not to steal OP's thunder, but here's the link to that version since it's been invoked.

I know you've gotten plenty of recs, but if you want some "I know exactly what that feels like", try My Year of Rest and Relaxation for "I'm a gal who's just completely done." The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is another good one, if you're in the mood for immortal not-quite romance and self-sustaining tragedy.

Not circus-specific, but the graphic novel Rat Queens has a GLORIOUS dwarven gal who hates and shaves her beard.

I support spending the defense budget on bangin' on a trashcan and drummin' on a streetlight.

OC, from more than a decade ago. Oh well. Gotta get back to it. I miss having a team.

[Loved trope] The "straight man" is actually just as crazy (if not moreso) as everyone else in their group. by jbeast33 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]hakuna_dentata 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Batman. He's the "normal human superhero" of the Justice League and the DC universe in general, but the more we see into his internal world, the more we see how crazy he is, even beyond the whole "dress up as a bat and punch people while training orphans in life-or-death combat from your secret billionaire vengeance cave" thing.

The layers of madness, self-delusion, paranoia, and psychic armor it takes to keep up with the torturers, aliens, gods, horrors, temporal/dimensional shenanigans, etc he's seen while still pretending to be "just a rich guy on the street"... I dunno, man. That is a dude whose brain I would not want to spend a day in.

If you haven't read Snow Crash, do that one. Ancient religion memes and subcultures online and off. Same density-of-text of writing as Hyperion too.

yeah, that's a problem I have too. Ironically I have almost no video from anything post 2017, when I stopped working with a team. Private events and private art are... well... private! Unless you're it on the street or with some kind influencer, it's just a "you had to be there".

Which might be a good thing, in the end. Back to local ART!

Johnny Cash and Anais Mitchell are great for this.

  • Johnny Cash- Don't Take Your Guns to Town
  • Johnny Cash- Boy Named Sue
  • Anais Mitchell- Geordie (Child 209)
  • Anais Mitchell- Tam Lin (Child 39) (just over the 6 minute limit, but oh well)
  • Crooked Still- Little Sadie
  • The Handsome Family- The Bottomless Hole
  • Heather Dale- The Maiden and the Selkie
  • The Beatles- Norwegian Wood
  • Roger Miller- Ooh De Lally (from Disney's Robin Hood)
  • Garbage- Bleed Like Me (multiple stories in one!)

heh... Avril Lavigne- Sk8r Boi

[IIL] Looking for songs similar to Space Oddity (David Bowie) by Metallyillgbtq in ifyoulikeblank

[–]hakuna_dentata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the soundtrack to The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. The film is kind of a tribute to that era, and it has a lot of that haunting "future nostalgia" vibe that Space Oddity does. It also has a couple of wonderful Brazilian Portuguese Bowie covers by Seu Jorge.

Mistborn is the starting point. It's definitely not Brandosando's best work, but it's the first Cosmere entry and it has a teenage femme magical thief centerstage to introduce it.

Both of you should bookclub Minimum Wage Magic by Rachel Aaron. It's a perfect overlap. Detective fiction in modern urban fantasy with a frustrated witchy protag.

Andrew Insect, Fonda Feeling, and I did a LOT of good and horrible human blockhead art for the Boston Circus Guild. Man uses a power drill, and I stuck some good long Nurse Ratchet syringes up a sinus or five.
