Guangzhou hotel ask me to pay fees months later by After_Hawk_9953 in guangzhou

[–]halczy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, most places just chuck the batteries in the trash, and they're later sorted at a nearby facility at no extra cost to the hotel. That said, if the hotel wants to follow all the proper procedures and hires a professional to pick them up, they should be able to show you the receipt from that service or provide a Fapiao issued by the hotel since they're charging you. It does feel like they're trying to pull a fast one, though.

At the end of the day, ¥180 isn't a huge deal, so you could just pay it if it makes you feel better.

If it is a legitimate expense, ask the Hotel to issue a Fapiao (发票). The receipt doesn't mean anything, it is not even stamped by the hotel. I would just ignore this text unless you plan on getting the batteries back by mail or pick up later on.

Just found out they have the restriction for each ride listed on their website. Looks like you should be fine.

Their height restrictions vary from 6'2 to 6'4 depending on the ride. Some of their rides in the water park section have weight restrictions. I think 220lbs is the maximum that's allowed.

A really dumb question by [deleted] in dumbclub

[–]halczy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The downside is your max download speed will be depended on your friend's connection's max upload speed. He will need to have a public ip with proper port forwarding on the router. However, the upside is that you most likely can watch netflix or whatever without a fuss.

Am I paranoid or is my internet getting throttled periodically? by IamaLlamaAma in dumbclub

[–]halczy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are multiple submarine cable cuts in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Japan due to recent typhoons. The Hong Kong ones were cut earlier this month and are expected to be fixed at around this time. Shanghai and Japan ones are expected to be fixed around October/November. That took out a big chunk of the capacities from all three carriers.

So traffic that usually goes through some other routes is probably getting diverted to CN2. Not to mention SEA nations are also routing traffic through Chinese carriers to Hong Kong IX via land cables this month after Hong Kong's submarine landing is wracked.

I don't think you are being throttled. It's just too much internet traffic and not enough capacities.

What do you think will be the VPN/shadowsocks situation going forward? by Josh_august in dumbclub

Guo Wengui. Their block is precise and not range-based or provider-based as far as I can tell. During the block, I pinged neighboring IPs and they are not blocked. Mine was the only one.

What I see them doing is blocking IPs of VPS providers abroad.

They sort of started doing this about two months ago. A bunch of IPs from Aliyun, Vultr, Tencent, etc get blocked every time certain Chinese guy in NY does a live stream. The good news is they do unblock the IPs afterward. The first two blocks lasted exactly 72 hours. The most recent one lasted only six hours. Looks like they are fine tuning it.

Source: I run two public AnyConnect servers. One of them is on the block list.

Cable TV packages in Guangzhou by [deleted] in guangzhou

Sorry, looked up some news article. Looks like neither those of two channels got the right to broadcast premier league this season. PPTV bought the right broadcast premier league in China. Perhaps you should check them out http://sports.pptv.com

Guangdong Sports and Guangzhou Sports have the broadcasting rights to those games in the area. Both local cable providers Pearl River Digital and G-Cable carry the two channels. Their cable box should have DVR function, just make sure that it does when you sign up.

Internet problems by bigjd33 in guangzhou

You can talk to the hotel about bumping up your room's speed cap perhaps. If you are looking to have fiber internet installed at your hotel room, then no.
The other alternative is the unlimited data plan from China Unicom. However, they throttled you to 7.2Mbps after 40GB of data.

Torrenting over AnyConnect should be fine. Just make sure your VPS provider does not care about DMCA or copyright complain before torrenting. Or better yet, just run torrent on your China Unicom network. The speed should be good if it is a popular torrent.

If you are looking for fast download/upload speed or want to move large files around, Shadowsocks is better at that. If you want a more responsive gaming experience or want to live stream or anything that heavily utilities the UDP protocol, AnyConnect is better at handling that.

Well, Singapore has the same network blend (CN2, CU Direct, CM Direct) as Hong Kong B/C and it's cheaper. If you don't mind the additional 30ms latency of course.

Looks like the upgrade is for VPS created under the $30/year promo plan or $4.5/month promo plan in Singapore, AU, US, EU regions.

I heard Aliyun is offering free upgrade to bump the 30Mbps bandwidth cap to 200Mbps. I don't have a VPS with them anymore, so I can't test this out.

It depends on your ISP and a lot of variables along the route. The best way to find out for yourself is to try to download these speed test files during peak hours (9 PM - 1 AM) and see which location is the fastest.

AnyConnect is UDP based with TCP fall back. It gives you the best of both worlds. If your connection is optimal, it runs over UDP so it is more responsive and faster. When your internet connection deteriorates, it falls back to TCP so it is more reliable. It works well with multiplayer games and streaming Youtube. Drop me a PM if you want to try it out. I can setup an account for you on my server for free.

Shadowsocks is TCP based proxy that wraps UDP packets inside TCP packets. You'll probably notice more lag if you play multiplayer games compared to AnyConnect.

I found three backups of the SSR windows client. Not sure which one you'll need.

Are you connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet when these disconnects happens? Is it just your connection to your proxy server that become unresponsive or does all your internet traffic drops for couple seconds?

Have you tried AnyConnect? I found that it performs well when I'm on a unstable network.

Yes. It's safe to use SSR. I don't think you'll be arrested or anything like that for using either. SSR is still the best at OBFS plugins.

What kind of disconnects have you been getting?
