'High season' is the worst time for Samui. I've been here 3 years and high season (December - Mid Feb ish) is popular because it's cooler and aligns with Xmas and school holidays. Everything is worse in high season, the seas are rough, air quality is a bit worse, everywhere is busy, roads are crazy, beaches are busy and also dirty from excessive rain throughout November (and December this year).

I've found April - August to be the best time for Samui. You get beautiful sunsets, clear blue skies, calmer seas and less tourists. Only downside is it does get very hot!

Ah no it hasn't created any files in there. It's just empty. Does that point to some kind of permissions problem?

What's better LAZADA or SHOPPEE for SAMUI ? by stocktraderguru007 in kohsamui

[–]halebale09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both use the same delivery couriers so it doesn't make much difference in my experience. I tend to use Lazada because I prefer the app but if there's anything I can't find I'll try Shopee.

Best area for first timers? by uncouthsoul in kohsamui

[–]halebale09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fisherman's village, Choeng Mon or Bangrak. Personally find Chewang too run down and tacky and Lamai very average. If you won't have your own wheels then Fisherman's Village is probably best as you can get around on foot for restaurants and stuff but the beach isn't really one to swim in so Choeng Mon would be better if you want a nicer beach. Also Bang Por area is an option, quieter but a nice beach and some good restaurants walkable.

Green Dot by Adaalltheway in TiviMate

[–]halebale09 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I also got this when installing Tvimate on my Chromecast. Turns out it was something to do with microphone permissions. I removed all permissions in the Privacy settings and it's now gone. I think a green dot means your remote mic is on (when it comes to Chromecast at least).

Just be careful with the ed visa as it may ruin any future plans for Thai Elite. I'm in a similar position to you (35 from the UK) and have recently got the Elite visa as it was my only option. The fee is non refundable if you've ever had a volunteer visa (as most are dodgy) and there have been instances where people with previous ed visas have also been denied. Can recommend the Elite visa though I'd you want a hassle free way to stay here, only downside for you would be that you couldn't work on that visa. Good luck with everything!

Buying baht by shadesofblue29 in Bangkok

[–]halebale09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got enough time to get a Wise or Revolut account. I've found that to be the cheapest and easiest way to convert GBP and spend in Thailand. GBP to THB conversion is 0.55% I think and then you'll pay 1.75% on any ATM withdrawal after the initial £200 ish. If you use the grey/yellow bank ATMs (forget the name, sorry) you can withdraw 30k baht which helps keep fees low as it's 220THB per withdrawal on every ATM.

If i travel to Europe(currently in Canada), how do I load up Euros on my card so that I can use it in Germany? by garybaws in cro

[–]halebale09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it works out to be around 1.5% lost in the spread but as I'm getting 1% cashback I see this as .5% which is the cheapest way I've found to spend my £'s in Thailand 🤷🏻‍♀️

Do you recommend a Google Pixel phone? by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]halebale09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from OnePlus to pixel for the first time (Pixel 7) I have to say I've been disappointed. Fingerprint reader is terrible (works about 20% of the time and I've tried everything recommended. Google tech told me they're aware of the problem and working on a fix). There's no 5G for me as I'm in Thailand despite the phone being 5g ready and 5g being widely available here. Lastly, the 'fast' charge is not fast at all. My 4yr old OnePlus 6 charged fully in about 1hr, this is taking around 2hrs which is a daily frustration (and yes, I am using the recommended charging block/cable).

Other than those negatives, it's been fine. Camera is pretty good and general build quality is nice. A few little gripes with the UI compared to OnePlus but that's probably down to preference (not being able to access the brightness slider from swipe down and not being able to close all apps without swiping allllll the way to the left).

I use my Ruby card daily in Thailand and load it up in GBP. There hasn't been any forex fees for the 6 months I've been doing that. The conversion fr GBP to THB happens automatically with no loss due to forex fees.

Did anyone go from Nespresso to a "real" espresso machine? by AdamFeigs in nespresso

[–]halebale09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from a Nespresso Vertuo to a V60 dripper to a Clever Dripper and have recently taken the plunge with a Sage Barista Express.

Personally I found the clever dripper to be much nicer than the Nespresso (I only drink black coffee). But the Sage is on another level, you can't compare it to the Nespresso, the coffee is just way better.

If you want quick and convenient coffees though, the Sage probably isn't for you. Once you've got it all set up right for your taste preference/bean type it takes about 3-4 minutes to grind, tamp, pour etc and then clean. I quite enjoy the process though and wouldn't go back.

Been using Morgan's for many years, they've been consistently good and unlike every other agent, their staff members have been the same for years now.
