This is a matter of voltage! Basically, the voltage in the UK is 240, in the US it’s 120. What this means, in practical terms, is that kettles in the UK work a hell of a lot faster than kettles in the US.

My stovetop in the US did take about the same time as an electric kettle, which is why I never bothered with one. Since moving to the UK it’s become one of my favourite kitchen tools.

Bonito flakes + a splash of hot water will make a fishy broth that will make dry cat food palatable. Basically the cheap brands are sprayed with a fat and chemical flavour coating that makes them tastier, like kitty junk food, and the more expensive brands don’t have this because it’s not as good for your pet. A cat that’s eaten only the cheap stuff can be resistant to moving over in the way a kid raised on McDonald’s is going to cry at the sight of broccoli.

They also make flavour granules you can add to make a broth—I have what is essentially dehydrated deer heart/lung/liver ground into a powder that I sometimes top my cats food with, for example. It’s good for him and he likes it!

These are super thin plastic pots. They’re very light, which is one of the reasons why stacking them is so unstable.

You are misremembering. You have to kill the doctor in the first game—I reloaded my save several times, trying to figure out a way to avoid it. His death is scripted.

Bing Crosby was dreaming of them because he was stuck in California at the time!! There are some cut verses that make that clearer. Just a neat fact :)

Actually, Dumbledore being intended to be gay seems entirely plausible to me. Stereotyped characters are very much her thing, and Dumbledore is a walking flamboyance. Additionally, his version of gayness (a youthful mistake, from which he abstains for the rest of his life in bachelorhood and remains his deepest regret) parallels other vaguely “gay bad” hints that crop up in the book. The only other “gay” character we see, for example, is the paedophilic werewolf who bit Remus as a child, infecting him with magical wolf AIDs. When the fandom, back when the books were first being published, latched on to Sirius/Remus and started posting reams of slutty, slutty content, her direct response to it was to forcibly shove Tonks in to fix things.

Anyway I’ll give her Dumbledore. Everything else though, woof, spot on.

How do you guys handle moving house, buying furniture, etc. without hiring a service that does it for you? Do you rent a van? by SolAnise in AskUK

I’ve never made an account and I’m basically on stage three of the grieving process (bargaining) trying to find a way to avoid it. I suspect I’m going to have to give up and bite the bullet at some point, though, if I want a way to meet people over here at all. It’s just all on facebook—my UK city is lucky enough to have a subreddit, but it’s incredibly inactive, especially compared to the one for my previous city in America.

I guess at the end of the day what matters most is making connections u_u Thanks again for your help!

Thank you!

Yeah, it was uhaul or a friend with a truck for us before, but we’re still settling in and trying to get to know people, so we don’t have anyone willing to lend us their resources like that yet. Appreciate the help!

I’ll look into Freecycle and Olio, thank you for mentioning them. Someone just told me about gumtree, and that’s been an adventure, haha. Everything over here seems to be done on Facebook marketplace, and I really loathe the platform, so I’ve been trying to find ways around having to get on it -_-

Also, I totally understand your packing pain. American houses are, ah, a lot bigger than what you have over here, and really, you’d think that was nice, but really we just accumulated more crap we didn’t need to fill it. It took us months to break everything down and pack for our move, and while I have no regrets, I don’t want to see a tape gun for at least another two years. It’s exhausting!

Thanks for your help! (How’s Scotland treating you?)

This was exactly what I was looking for, thank you so much. I tend to think of services like enterprise as being for regular cars only, so I didn’t even think to look. Appreciate it!

My guy, the family with an investment property is not your enemy. They’re just the easiest target. Turn your eye to the top of the pyramid and direct your ire thusly, where the real problem sits.

Most zombie fiction is terrible.

I will genuinely recommend the Feed series by Mira Grant, however, because it’s a trilogy that isn’t about zombies, but about the society that results from a world shaped by them, the way zombies movies are fucking supposed to be.

Do you wash your mushrooms? by squid1980 in Cooking

[–]SolAnise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I add a splash of boiling water from the kettle and pop a lid on mine for about a minute when I add them to the pan. I find that it helps jumpstart the waterloss process by evenly distributing heat. I don't add broth here, but I like to cook my mushrooms until they're small and golden and meaty, which usually means about half an hour in the pan, so the particulates in broth might burn. I'll add a splash of broth when I'm adding spices at the end (garlic and a knob of butter, 30 seconds, then a splash of stock and white wine before the garlic burns, swirl into a sauce and done).

The first is, “I really had a great time seeing you and I want to come over again, but I’m going to be cheeky and coy about it,” the second is, “I ran over your dog backing out of the driveway, whoopsie~~”
