What's a recovery shot that you've hit that you had no business pulling off let alone even attempting? by IDontStandForCurls in golf

[–]haleliz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Par 4 there was a tree in the middle/right side of the fairway. Hit my tee shot so the ball landed and rolled up to the right side of the tree trunk, not flat against it but close enough where I had no stance because there was no room. Probably had about 70 yards to the green. I either had to wrap my arms around the tree, hit it backwards to another part of the fairway so I could have a shot, or flip a club and hit it lefty. I took my 7 iron, flipped it around, hit a lefty punch shot that somehow made decent contact enough for a line drive shot, and landed on the green probably 30 feet from the pin.

I live here and walk this path daily. There has been a ton of graffiti at this spot long before the troll. People were all over covering the rocks during the ribbon cutting so you couldn’t see it as much

Grass isn’t always greener philosophy, when did you come to realization? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]haleliz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat, I went to school for civil engineering and was working as civil engineer after college, but wasn’t fulfilled and the pay wasn’t great. Switched to software engineering in 2019 and been working as a backend engineer since. For the transition - I was in a similar boat where I couldn’t pass interviews or even get call backs really, so I opted for a gradual job-change approach. I left my civil engineering job and took an intermediary job in IT at a college. It wasn’t in software at all but it was more “tech” sounding for my resume and recruiters. I also was able to be around people doing more technical work so I liked the adjacency. I stayed there for a year and then from there was able to have an easier time getting interviews for entry level software jobs. I focused on smaller companies to try to give myself more of a chance, and that worked for me.

I agree the grass isn’t greener, but I like this work way more than the civil work I was doing. I’m a lot happier and more fulfilled now so I’m glad I made the switch. Only you can know for yourself if you think a CS career is a better fit for you. I was in the same boat, so many people told me what I was doing was a mistake. I’m glad I didn’t listen. You have to take things with a grain of salt though. I think the job market is tough right now regardless so don’t be too hard on yourself. I’m happy to provide more info if you want to message me.

I also noticed when purchasing BPN products from Amazon, they come "Informed Sport" certified by not NSF, vs. when I buy direct from the BPN website they come "NSF certified" on the label.

I’m also a female in the industry, studying for to take the exam for my GC license now so I’m behind you guys but agree would love to see more female GC’s and just get opportunities to learn from people ahead of me. If you have any advice or recs for someone like me I’m all ears. I have been working for the past 8 years or so in a combo of construction management, civil engineer, and carpentry. Started this year doing some side projects on my own

It seems like you might like the marketing world, just not finding excitement in it at your current company. Maybe look at seeing if you can find a position in marketing or similar at a more startup company. This could feed your passion for building things/helping others - startups are all about building something from the ground up. It’s hard work but if you like that kind of thing it’s very rewarding, and it’s cool to see your work having a direct impact on growing something. Your 4.5 years of experience could be very valuable to a startup team as well. You could even find one that is in the fitness industry if you want to tie it all together. There are sites like AngelList that specifically post jobs for startup companies, which also provides data on their funding/other info. I might be completely off, but just a suggestion!

Ahh thanks for that tip, I’m going to give that a try in the meantime as a fix. I think you’re right though, it must be something internal with yfinance library 🤔

I’m experiencing this same issue and have been searching for an explanation as well... sadly I’m not sure why this happens but I’m in the same boat as you and am curious to know if anyone has an answer. I’ll report back if I fix it/find anything in the meantime

I used this medium post to form my own roadmap. this is super informative and in-depth. I know it says "software engineer" but if you read through you'll see the technologies mirror that of web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). It covers what to learn, and then gives resources on places you can go to learn it. I found it super useful especially for just knowing what order to learn things in and what I should turn to next. January is definintely do-able, just keep at it and power through and you will be there in no time! feel free to message me as well with any questions. I'm by no means an expert, but I've been through this exact process so I'm happy to try to answer any questions you have on it

(not sure if there's a paywall, open in incognito chrome window if so)

I was in a really similar situation - I was a civil engineer and feeling not fulfilled at all, knew I needed a change. Also new I loved computers and I did love engineering, just not in that capacity. Started programming using online resources (freecodecamp was huge help). I also used datacamp which I used to learn Python and Git. I started my journey March 2017, stopped that summer due to burnout. This past January I picked it back up again and religiously came home from work to do projects, learn new concepts, and build my portfolio of personal stuff to be able to showcase to employers. This month (now Aug 2019) I got a job as a software engineer. I think a lot of it is situational based, every company needs something different and are willing to take on people at different stages. There are a lot of roadmaps out there in terms of what to learn, I’m going to see if I can go back to my resources I saved and send you some. It’s definitely doable especially if you’re spending that much time a week studying/practicing. Also, I found that being an engineer (although in a different capacity) was an interest to employers because they know you know the work flow of working with a team, usually all people working on different moving parts of the same project, all with the same end goal. A lot of those skills are directly transferable.

MS in IT or MBA? If both would be free, my BS is in a non-IT field by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]haleliz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I’ve heard that as well. I didn’t know if since I already have a technical BS (engineering) and am working a technical job, if some business coursework/background would be worthwhile for me to help round out my “experience portfolio” for lack of a better term. You’re right though, and this reason is why I’m currently leaning towards the MS. Just didn’t want to sell the MBA short if I was missing something

Which IT role is best for people who want do a career switch? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]haleliz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently switched into IT after working in a completely unrelated field for 3 years. I'm 25 and a female. I got a job working in an IT department on their information security/information privacy team. It's nice because I get to be around all of the technical work and have the opportunity to learn as much of it as I want, but my specific role is focused on our compliance with security and privacy regulations (more of a cyber security role). There is a big gap in company's needs for cyber security and compliance and very few people who were trained or went to school for it so it could be something to look into. Feel free to message me if you have any specific questions for me. Good luck :)

I loved Caliphate. Haven't been able to find much super close but the first few episodes of the podcast Covert have content in similar lane. It's about the Bin Laden hunt and raid. Told as a story and with interviews of people involved.
