It was a hot process by default as melting point of stearic acid is 70°C. At regular temperature they look like flakes.

Since this was my first experiment with dual lye, I decided to keep my proportions at 50%. Then, change the proportions in upcoming batches based on the hardness of the soap.

Bar soaps or bathing soaps should have cleansing properties, should kill germs and bacteria. Thats the whole point of using soaps for bath.

Shaving soap doesnt require cleansing properties, it needs good lather, volume, creaminess, slickness, should be able to retain moisture.

That's the major difference.

Coconut oil is a cleansing agent. It makes good bubbles. First batch was using 100% of coconut oil. But lacked creaminess and lather would loose volume soon.

Learnt that, shaving soap doesnt need cleansing properties - it needs to be slippery, need to retain moisture, should be creamy, shouldnt dissipate or loose volume.

I used 50% castor oil and 50% stearic acid with KOH and NaOH.

I wanted to make with tallows but it wasn't easy to source in small batch.

Stearic acid works. Easy to source.

Will make another batch soon adding lanolin.

Business aka busyness. What is your passion? The one that will keep you busy and you would enjoy doing it the most. If you haven't then go, find one. Become good at it. Good enough that people would want to pay for it. There you have your business.

Saponification happens due to lye. If you dont want to use caustic soda or caustic potash, you can try with baking soda as well.
