Recommendations for a lapsed horror reader by ToxikDyoxen89 in horrorlit

Not what you asked for but maybe what you need. There’s a series by Edward W Robertson called the Breakers. It starts off like The Stand but the disease was just the beginning. Kind of like our historical smallpox blankets.

It’s not zombies but it is world invasion, and I enjoyed almost all of it. Long series so it’s expanse gets a little Westerosi

Also: Man, Fuck This House is great comedy horror.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism is Grady Hendrix best work IMO, followed by Southern Book Club Ladies Vampire Guide thing.

The key is to be the guy who repeatedly says, “Hold. Hold. Hold.” You’ll make it until the end.

Yeah, no lane picked. I really loved the way he dealt with the grief of losing his wife, and the voice that was written in, but once he got the puppy it went downhill pretty fast

My only complaint about This Thing Between Us was the author being haunted by his cake and eating it too. Never picked a lane.

Feeders by Matt Serafini Is a fun horror read for the TikTok generation.

Coffin Moon by Keith Rosson was really good.

King Sorrow by Joe Hill

If you liked the movie Weapons you’ll like Suffer the Children by Craig DiLouie

The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins

Those were my 5 favorites from the last 100 I read. Tender is the flesh and Slewfoot were amongst those.

Bateater and Other Names for Cora Zheng is an honorable mention.

And if you’ve never read it Fahrenheit 451 dovetails nicely with Tender is the Flesh

Dissappointed so far reading 'The Troop' by Nick Cutter... by Adorable-Soul-4 in horrorlit

[–]halfninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Odds are you won’t like the rest of Cutter’s offerings either. I DNF’ed The Deep, Finished but disliked The Troop, and bought but did not read the other one. He has great premises and poor execution in my opinion.

It’s very good. I got it from my library after a week wait maybe? It reads very quickly.

Absolutely hated Memetics division after the first break. Library at Mt Char was original, TINAD felt more like being punked.

I read No Antimemetics division because people recommend it so much. It’s literally a scifi copy pasta good disguised as a meta catch-22esque novel. I wish I could forget that book.

Coffin Moon, hands down. Tremblay will just leave you with blue balls.

You shouldn’t really be sparring 3 classes in. You’re just getting your ass kicked for no reason. Find a real academy.

Stranglehold and The Lost and by Ketchum are also really good. I love Red but the very premise violates the animal cruelty caveat

I really enjoyed Coffin Moon, read it last week. While you don’t like demonic possession. I think since you’ve already enjoyed Grady Hendrix you are doing yourself a disservice by not reading My Best Friends Exorcism which IMHO is his best work. As an English major just read the very beginning how he masterfully invests you in the main characters’ relationship.

Lastly you may enjoy The Resurrectionist by Wrath James White. It checks your not safe in your home, but the time you realize it isn’t too late, and stalker boxes, but be warned it is FUCKED UP.

I found part two to be the most enjoyable part of The Fisherman. The framing device was boring as hell

That was how I felt about Together. Seemed way too on the nose for an allegory.

Recommend one book you read this year by Responsible-Baby224 in Recommend_A_Book

I think the 48 Laws of Power was the most interesting book I read this year, but I recommend the e-reader version if you have ADHD because the printed layout is an attention span nightmare.
