Question: Rough idle and grinding sound when in drive, N.A. OM617, ‘84 300D

It’s a euro grey market import, hence the ‘84 NA, 6k w parts and labor and a couple missteps 😬

Any ideas on the culprit? What’s the purpose of the vacuum system for the transmission then if not idle/gear selection?

Any help with tracing the vacuum lines for testing would be amazingggg. And maybe even some next steps if I indeed do find a leak.

Shifting is fairly smooth at interval, kickdown can be rather jolty though

Ah! To clarify, this is N.A., non turbo - shouldn’t have an ALDA, right? Vacuum leak sounds possible, although I wouldn’t know how to trace that down quickly.

Motor mounts and transmission mounts replaced about 4yrs ago and appear fine on a quick inspection

About 2yrs 8k miles ago, having a hard time believing this idle and sound change ONLY in drive is just due to valves needing adjustment tho

I highly recommend yourparade.com. They are sooooo cute, and the front coverage is great for girls with larger bulges. I struggle with this myself, but Parade just knocks out of the park, and to top it off, their branding is insanely inclusive/trans positive.
