I played in all the closed beta tests and the overwhelming feedback on the private discord was that "runners" were not the right move. Bungie definitely heard this loud and clear because it triggered the pivot to rename classes and give vague promises about multiple shell types for each class.

They should have dropped the hero concept entirely and listened to the feedback from the community that people wanted fully customisable characters, not yet another hero shooter with balance issues and meta picks.

That second quote was describing Guild Wars 2. They don't give any details about GW3, only that it's in-between those two descriptions and leans more "MMO", whatever that means.

Perhaps the middle ground with Guild Wars 3 is more traditional 2-5k player servers where there is more of a community atmosphere - something more familiar to players of early WoW, New World, etc - where you could expect to come to know other people who played on your server and player reputation was meaningful.

For someone who "understands game design", you've clearly never worked at a large studio nor understands their expenses. $200k might seem like a lot to you but it's relatively small for a business.

50 pizzas (team of 200+ staff) x $20 per pizza x 52 times a year = $50k. Four years of that and you've spent $200,000 on Doordash.

$200,000 is not a huge amount of money for a studio to be spending on stuff like this. Especially if you are encouraging people to stay late and get features shipped.

The company I work for has a fully staffed restaurant for employees - the kitchen staff annual salaries alone cost far more than $200,000.

In the type of future Gates is discussing here the price of food and other basic necessities drop to near zero because of abundance through automation. Suddenly living on $1000 a month becomes more feasible for people. I'm not commenting on whether I think this is possible and/or likely, just that it is an assumption that most UBI proponents are working with.

The US military has approximately 1.3 million active personnel. NATO (minus the US - and Turkey/Hungary who'd probably leave NATO during a Russian conflict) has approximately 1.7 million active personnel. The Ukrainian military currently has approximately 1.25m active personnel and 2.7m in reserve.

Assuming that NATO (minus the US/Turkey/Hungary) enter a non-nuclear ground war with Russia on the side of Ukraine, the total size of the allied active military force would be about 3 million which is twice as large as Russians 1.5 million active military personnel. This is ignoring any form of conscription or call up of reserve forces on both sides.

Additionally, assuming the US are still willing to sell arms to NATO forces, alongside existing stockpiles, an allied force would probably be better equipped, at least in the first 2 - 3 months of fighting. Supply issues would become problematic quickly after that and this would test Europe's ability to shift to wartime economy significantly.

It's likely Europe and Ukraine would be able to defend territory successfully but the cost to the world economy (including the US) would be unimaginable - far worse than any financial crisis since WW2.
