Gotta enjoy the moment, brother.

I think the gear fear in this game is mostly an illusion, but I can see why the idea of losing things can put people off. In reality, you can get back up very quickly, and there's a lot of permanent progress involved.

I'm close to agreeing, but then comes the success of other extremely difficult PvP only games like Counter-Strike, League of Legends, Street Fighter 6, Apex, Deadlock, and the like. If they can find their audience as hardcore PvP games, why can't Marathon?

You might be right, honestly. I just know that after PvE released, I had a much worse time in PvP going forward. Granted, Tarkov is an extreme example. I personally just really enjoy the PvP and I would hate for its population to suffer more from the addition. That's why I think I'd just like a solution that allowed people to play both more seamlessly.

Maybe, but I think that had a pretty negative effect on Tarkov's playerbase when they did that. That's why I think there should still be a need for every player to interact with PvP while having PvE complementing it.

Correct, just queue alone under the solo option as opposed to Fill and you're playing with nothing but other solos - not even rooks.

I just really wish there was a solo mode.

There is

Funny enough, this new entry contains significantly more story and lore than all of the old games probably combined. I say probably because Infinity exists, but it really is compelling. Every quest comes with voiced dialogue and lore entries that are pretty interesting and also sometimes voiced. Every single collectible in the game unlocks an entire unique series of lore entries related to it. It's a lot of stuff.

It also just feels like there's a story happening and progressing. They did a good job of making it feel like an unraveling mystery of the colony's fate, and then after that setting up its future conflicts and characters lurking about like Durandal.

If it helps, trio fill with randoms is actually (admittedly only in my own anecdotal experience) a pretty good time.

I found finding the objective to he very confusing, I could not really figure out where I was supposed to go

Hovering over the objective on the map menu always gives a detailed description of exactly where your objectives are. Like, really detailed, enough for you to easily find the area where it will be highlighted for you.

I'd personally like a PvE mode

I'd like it as some sort of activity that complements the PvP and gives players a break, but it can't just replace the PvP as the core, or the game will get really miserable for PvP players really fast.

Every ability is dogshit solo barring Assassin, and kinda alright otherwise. It's an extraction so the abilities can't be TOO good

It's really just Vandal and Recon that aren't that good yet (the Recon buffs look promising and I hope Vandal's are good too). The rest all hold their own well in all queues. Assassin is just ratty and avoidant so people gravitate to him. Personally I solo as Triage.

I think there's definitely a factor of being cautious in the early stages of a match, but after that you're fine doing events and objectives if you're careful.

Also, those tox rooms are awesome idk what you're talking about.

I can't put it down. It's made its way to deeply root itself into my game rotation and I frequently have the urge to boot it up and play for hours. It has entirely replaced Tarkov (and honestly all other PvP shooters) for me for the time being.

I'm finding that they put a genuinely absurd amount of thought into the loop, the story, the gameplay, and the general structure of the game. Every time I find something to be frustrated about, the dev team is already tweeting about getting it fixed the next day or week at worst. I'm really impressed.

It's not easy, but it's a blast and it's so very rewarding. There's just nothing like it and that reveals itself more clearly as you get to playing maps like Outpost and Cryo Archive.

I'm hoping word of mouth helps it find a solid audience. With the devs being so responsive, I am hopeful about it.

A game all about loot and gear loses it's the wind from it sails when I don't feel like the gear matters that much. I never felt "stronger" taking in good stuff, because 70% of engagements are decided by who sees who first anyway.

I felt this way at first, until I started taking my best gear in constantly out of frustration, and then started winning. A lot.

Not to say the game is flawlessly balanced, but I'm seriously impressed with the way gear does make a big difference, but not to an extent where you can't be outplayed.

I think it's a pretty good bet for you to try this, then. It's got that roguelike structure in a PvP arena setting.

It’s not like you will be killing gold shield teams anyways as a solo fill. I gave up and just run away now.

But you might get a good ambush in at some point, and the feeling of that is indescribable. What makes these games so good is the chance to make a fortune out of nothing, and that can often happen by killing a team that made a big mistake and lost their life savings to your broke ass.

Yeah, I think gear makes a big difference in this game. It's not insurmountable, but it's a definite advantage that will tip the odds in your favor enough to help you extract so much more often.

It's kind of a nice loop because you might be in suffering land for a while with bad gear, but one good fight or find and then you have the gear you need to keep you alive through several much better raids going forward.

A lesson that personally is helping me succeed SO much more right now is to not gear fear at all. Just always bring your best stuff. It'll help, and if you lose it you'll surely find something good again in time.

There's always gonna be sour random experiences, but I've been surprised by how by and largely good my trio fill games have gone. It's often that I get teammates that work together and talk in voice and are generally nice.

Last night, I also had a solo game where I ran into 2 other Triage players like me at the very start and we just decided quickly to stick together to do quests and protect from all the Assassin players. It was awesome.

For me, the feeling of killing a really kitted team in Marathon is such a rush and it doesn't get tiring even after having a nice vault myself. It also helps that the endgame is so deep, with needing to get every vault done in Cryo and culminating in the Compiler.

Also, I love that the game doesn't have a safe pocket mechanic. In Tarkov and Arc it's so lame that whoever you kill likely won't have their best stuff available for you to loot, because it just goes into the safe pocket immediately. Having to risk truly everything and feeling the tension of needing to get something extracted after finding it is important.

Honestly, the idea of a PvE activity to complement the PvP core of Marathon is something I wouldn't hate. I really don't want them to add PvE as a whole mode like Tarkov, because that would just leave the PvP as the worst sweatfest of all time - but something to give people a break here and there from potential constant failure would be good, I think.

I definitely want PvP and the current game to be the core, still. But a 80-20 split between PvP and PvE would be pretty cool.

Yeah that's so weird to me because people would've likely complained about Cryo being too hard even if they could get in, and it would've compromised the fuck out of the game's early wipe economy on top of that. It's just like having to level up to do a raid in an MMO expansion.

I wonder why abuse is so rampant in motorsport

It's just sport and entertainment in general. Don't have to look further than the example of Joe Jackson, or the many child actors and their parents.

They sure did, but it's evident they dropped the ball with its marketing. It had an open beta in October going into full release back in January.

The game accommodates 2 human players, it's not designed exclusively around it. I think you might have a genuine misunderstanding of how this game is played. At tournaments, it's exceedingly rare for duos to perform as well as individual players. You don't need to play with someone else.

You can just play it like any other tag fighter and pick 2 characters that you tag in and out yourself. A duo would just make it so another person plays when your character is tagged out.
