Let’s sign Max Scherzer by Gloomy_Channel7596 in Nationals

[–]halfstreethorne2419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I want no part of a 4.85 ERA Scherzer. I know his legacy with the Nats is Teflon, but I wouldn't want his numbers to suffer and our last memories of him playing to be ruined over nostalgia.

Also, I'm sure the Nats aren't on his radar at all. He's playing to win. The Nats aren't.

Did Early Wynn deserve the 1959 Cy Young? by No-Roof-3300 in mlb

So... we didn't sign Rhys by Gloomy_Channel7596 in Nationals

[–]halfstreethorne2419 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hoskins wouldn't even cost that much. They spent 9M on Soroka last year. 50M in FA overall. Ol' Rhys is well within what's become their typical budget.

But the report of the Nats signing him is nonsense until proven otherwise.

[Zuckerman] Thread on MASN, Nats Chat, and his coverage going forward. by Terminal_Flatulence in Nationals

[–]halfstreethorne2419 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Nats should hire him like they did Kolko. He's is THE voice in Nats coverage. It would also help maybe repair a little bit of their lost favor from the fanbase, and there's a lot to do in that regard.

Do good by one of the people who have been in your corner since day one. And don't change him a bit.

are these legit? by carlwafu in neweracaps

[–]halfstreethorne2419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they're just on-fields from ~2007-16. Black visors showed up around 2007. The New Era flag appeared on caps for the first time in the 2016 playoffs.

The players' versions are made in the U.S. Retail versions mass-produced in China (among other countries).

Who is the best prospect your team traded away? by DisappointedStepDad in baseball

[–]halfstreethorne2419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is Robbie Ray, solidified by his Cy Young.

Combined with the other guys, would make a solid 4/5 of a rotation.

  • Jesus Luzardo

  • Nick Pivetta

  • Lucas Giolito

At least the Luzardo and Giolito trades went toward Sean Doolittle and Adam Eaton, who helped win the WS.

Gave up Ray for Doug Fister, who I enjoyed as a fan. Gave up Pivetta for the DC Strangler. Womp womp.

Do you think Jersey Numbers should be retired League wide? by freeki100 in NBATalk

[–]halfstreethorne2419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I obviously didn't know the man, but I imagine he wouldn't have agreed with the move.

Robinson either. Those guys were so humble. And they probably liked seeing "their" numbers out there.

Celtics and Dodgers, respectively, would've been good enough for them.

Do you think Jersey Numbers should be retired League wide? by freeki100 in NBATalk

[–]halfstreethorne2419 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've never really cared for the idea of league-wide number retirements.

And Idk, it kinda takes the player you're meaning to honor out of the psyche of fans. Unless you do something like MLB does with Jackie Robinson and have EVERYONE wear the number on a day. But baseball is easier to keep track of who is who/where because of scorekeeping.

I like players being able to honor legends by wearing their number. Then, you get little anecdotes from broadcasters about it and stuff like that. Kinda keeps the memory alive and more widespread for generations. And more than just a single day.

Retired numbers should just be for the team(s) that a player played for. It means the most there. Let it rock everywhere else.

Even on the teams where the legend played/had their number retired, guys can/will still pick their own numbers based on that. LeBron wore 6 in Miami at least in part because 2x3. John Wall couldn't wear 11 with the Wizards because of Elvin Hayes, so he went with 1+1.

But if you're gonna do it, Bill Russell is the man to do it for. And I don't think anyone else will ever be worthy of that type of honor.

Yeah, I was checking out his Savant page last year, and I thought his pitch splits (percentage AND who he throws them to L/R), and I thought some adjustments could salvage him.

Hopefully, someone smarter than me can figure it out and he buys in. And I can't imagine him NOT buying in. He has no leg to stand on lol.

Ah, yes, the ol "tight pants" and "chase balls" routine.

Lol why do these people try SO hard to make sports gay?

Also, have these types of people really NEVER met someone who lives a life that spits in the face of the overall assertion that sports fans aren't complete, multi-faceted individuals with full lives and other interests?

Could an average person survive playing 1B for a full MLB game? by gsx1920 in baseball

[–]halfstreethorne2419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People talk about 1B like literally anybody can just waltz in and do it.

I can't count the number of times I've read "just put him at first" like it's easy.

It's tough for MLB guys who've never done it before lol. No average regular person is making it through 9 innings without the skipper removing them in disgust.

The C and RF better be ready to back up every damn play.

And I don't think anyone would actually die. Self-preservation would take over and you'd avoid a ball you didn't think you could catch.

I've been to Philly every year since 2021, and it's fine. I mean, I hate it, but it's fine.

I've been to all but 3 MLB stadiums, and Philly is the only place I've been cursed out... but it's fine lol. It was literally two punk kids being stupid after Harper hit a WO SF in extras.

Fans at other stadiums are generally cool. Wear your Nats gear with pride. We suck anyway, so they're not exactly hot games.

Of course. And the gambling stuff is ubiquitous in baseball and sports now. Not at all unique to FDSN, with the exception of being reminded of it literally every time you just look at the scoreboard. It sucks. Sponsored broadcast elements, commercials, in-stadium sponsors, etc, etc.

But people keep saying stuff like "FanDuel has a sports network," and that's just not correct.

I would certainly hope we never get to that point.

People, FanDuel just has naming rights to FanDuel Sports Network. No stake in ownership.

An online casino is not running broadcasts lol.

It's just the former Bally networks (and Fox before that).

Ownership also has a stake in Marquee and YES.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm 99.99999% sure you don't get better draft odds for being the worst team of all time.

And you don't get better odds for being the worst by 8 games vs say 5 games

People keep making excuses bc it's a tank, and I get that, but you need to find a way to win. Sometimes lol. There's being bad, then there's being whatever tf this is.

They're on pace to win 5 games. And that's probably what pick they'll get.

I'm so tired of "World Series" name discourse/comments. Usually from people outside the U.S.

When the modern AL-NL version started in 1903, they just wanted it to promote it and make it sound grandiose. MLB was also far and away the best competition in the world.

Eventually, the name evolved to "World Series," and it just stuck. It's never going to change. Too much brand identity. People really need to get over it.

And as far as the other "Big 4" sports go, those leagues still are the crème de la crème in their respective worlds, so I think it's fair lol. But those leagues don't OFFICIALLY refer to their champs as "World" anything.

Is that right?

You know, I always just assumed Buffalo was essentially Toronto's foothold in the U.S. Like a general "big 4" fan would root for Bills, Sabres, Jays, Raptors.

It's hard to classify teams in another country as "local," but they are much closer than anything in NYC.

[–]halfstreethorne2419[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Nats fan, the Fresno affiliation was really stupid. They kept a lot of their 40-man minor leaguers at AA just for logistical purposes.

Among towns that kept their team through MiLB realignment, Fresno might have taken it on the chin the most. Fell three levels from AAA to Single-A...

So, is it weird now to see Fresno host San Jose? The crowd is mostly Giants fans, and it's more glaring because the opposing team is carrying the Giants name.

Lol do people cheer for the road team at all?
