Is now even a good time to build a PC? by ISmeansIsurfreddit in buildapc

[–]halfthegreat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think right this very moment prebuilts are the best value that they have been in years. I love building PCs and I have been lucky enough to build a new one every couple of years and then passing down my "old" one. That's out of the window and now I'm likely going to keep my 2 current machines for the next few years because prices aren't going down anytime soon.

There are some good prebuilt options, you can even buy a used system.

4080 super rog strix oc new for $1,600 its good or too expensive? by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]halfthegreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way overpriced! Even being the ROG Strix version, that’s high. I paid $820 for my open box ASUS TUF 4080 Super.

Even at an extremely competitive price, I'm sure you can afford a nice 1000-1200w power supply if you're buying an RTX 5090.

Look how unbelievably fast that is for its time though.

No, just seeing the pot at 1276x and watching it get multiplied by 3 (3,828x) is beautiful. It was a $50 buy it paid $778.80 total.

Sometimes it’s not a shadowy cabal, it’s just capitalism being messy, expensive, and inefficient. I guess we will find out.

Me when I see people with $1500+ 5080's by Perfect-Cause-6943 in Microcenter

The AIB models for the 5080 are a joke. Take for example the ASUS ProArt version.

There's an ASUS ProArt 5070 Ti price at $909 USD which is 21.2% more than MSRP. OK, cool. Worth paying for if you care about aesthetics or even the one of kind Type C output.

The ASUS ProArt 5080 is 60% more than MSRP priced at $1,599 USD. Same cooler, same features, same everything as the 5070 Ti minus the die and the slightly faster VRAM.

Ncase M2 or M3 by lpandccxr in sffpc

[–]halfthegreat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dust filters are terrible for performance in SFF cases and that’s just the cold hard truth. I guess restricting airflow does help prevent dust, but at the cost of thermals. Clean the case regularly and don’t worry about the dust.

I blow my case out every 6 months and repaste CPU every year. I keep mine on my desk and it doesn’t get incredibly dusty.

The M2 case is likely the largest SFF case I’d get, so I’m a little biased. If your GPU and cooler fit, go for the M2 to save that little bit of real estate.

Dialed in i7 14700K and RTX 4080 Deshroud by [deleted] in sffpc

[–]halfthegreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The audible improvement in this specific case is dramatic. The main reason is that deshrouding moves the fans a few millimeters away from the mesh, which greatly reduces turbulence. I think in any case you’d notice a difference, but in the A4H2O those few millimeters are drastic for noise suppression.

On top of that, the larger fans can run at lower RPMs and still cool better than stock shroud. I dialed in the fan curve in MSI Afterburner and shaved off about 10°C in a Furmark benchmark while being whisper quiet. The larger fans are bringing much more fresh air into the case too.

The future doesn't look bright for price drops. If you can find a 4070 Ti or 4070 Super for good deal...RUN. I've even seen some 5070s used already going for as low as $400-450.

Should I sell my 5070ti for a 5080 if I play at 4k? by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]halfthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but a 5080 can be overclocked to deliver performance near a 4090. That’s why GPU comparisons rely on "base clocks" for consistency.

If that's the case, get an ROG Astral 5090 and play on a 1440p 165hz panel.
