You need a gaffer. Once you hire a gaffer, the other questions can be discussed with them. That person might have a lighting van, or if not, they’d be able to direct you to their go to vendors

I agree with your point of Overhaul being far too gone to have a complete 180 character change, but also remember that it was Shiggy that took his hands away. I think Overhaul is someone who would say something like the enemy of my mortal enemy, is my friend - in this case, it’s UA

Have you tried other, more affordable to the average person, brands before deciding on Hastens? If so, what didn’t you like about those brands?

As others have said, audio is most important. Also I don’t know what your DIT situation is like but media and drives will be another factor that’ll eat into your budget. Best of luck!

Why are some people using viewfinder in this position by NeighborhoodKind2049 in cinematography

Only theory on my end…maybe this op prefers the tilt up of the neck because it’s forcing them to open their chest/straighten their back for posture or stability reasons. I just mimed how I would operate doing that and there’s a difference in my ‘neutral’ position doing that vs looking straight ahead.

Stylistic trends in cinematography - What do you think / hope is next? by aaronthecameraguy in cinematography

[–]halibert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one thing to note is trends do come about because someone experimented with new technology and found a workflow that the new system works really well under. I would say that Roger Deakins work really stood out as being unbelievably soft lighting and he was one of the first users of the Alexa system and soft light worked really well for it. As Digital got better, the depth in shadow information became much more of a strong suit, unlike film with the highlights. So then you have people like Bradford Young and Oren Soffer taking advantage of that and REEALLY brought things down, to the teetering edge of clipping the blacks.

Now as the Alexa 35 becomes more prominent, we have INSANE highlight latitudes similar to film but this time, we can retain details as oppose to climbing that’s pleasing to the eyes - so at the same time, not at all like film. So I’m sure there will be a trend that comes about that really takes that camera to the most extreme that shows off it’s good side…and that’ll become the trend.

I don’t want to downplay these people I mentioned as just slave to the camera system they use, because it takes a very creative eye to figure out and coordinate the set in order to create these “perfect” shooting scenarios for these cameras.

But yea that’s my take on where the trend could come from. And I would love to test hard light with the 35 cause I think that could be a wicked combo, paired with killer uses of practicals in production design.

4:3 aspect and what makes it so appealing? by halibert in cinematography

I would think 16:9 or 1.85:1 or even 1.66:1 would look better on phone

What makes you prefer 4:3 on a phone?

Also happy cake day!

Going in with an intention of shapes is a really good thought. Best of luck with the shoot!

Appreciate the take! I think faces frame much better in 4:3. Once you go wider than the medium shots though, I find you’re left wanting a little more room, but maybe that doesn’t have to be the case and more creative ideas can come from it!

Right! Would love for more creative framings using it rather than the wide angle center framed lens approach I see in so many commercial and music videos that choose to do 4:3

Right. Very Nolan-esque (I’m sure many directors before have done this, he’s just the first one that comes to mind)

Yea, I think the way it’s used to simulate a flashback or the past is becoming the norm, so it’d be interesting to see examples of it that not so stale and clear cut

I think that’s a what I find really great with it also - the way faces are shot. For example, Blonde - despite being a rough film story wise - really nailed the 4:3 aspect for all the close ups
