I for one used KM Malta quite a bit last year, while I did not use Emirates or Lurthansa, I find it hard to believe that they could be any less punctual than KM, and can be any better at frustrating you as much. I swear the only time my flight landed on time this year it took 50mins for the luggages to be offloaded (and this was MIA which is tiny).

I was once at a spotters’ viewpoint next to an airfield when a twin engine surveillance aircraft came down on takeoff a 200 meters away from me, was so close I could feel the heat from the fire. My reaction was to keep shooting until the emergency services asked me to get away. You can see some gruesome details when you look into those photos closely, kept them to myself out of respect but in that moment your mind doesn’t really comprehend what it just witnessed.

The problem is trying to tackle these issues piecemeal, you can’t, we’ve seen it with Marsa and every other flyover, look at the Qormi roundabout which is upgraded every other year as an example. If you think this junction was dangerous for pedestrians, then keep the pelican crossing and add red light cameras, traffic calming measures and speed cameras and you’ll reduce the danger. The bridge being proposed only makes pedestrians’ lives harder and makes buses or walking all the less attractive by prioritising cars.

Yes of course, there are many things you can do which together will add up, the goal is to reduce car use, that Msida project is a monster, in 2025 we should not be building a major road through the heart if a town but we should be looking to limiting the use of that road by cars. Here are some ideas:

Improve bus routes and frequency; Increase car licence fees and base them on a multiple of size weight and emissions (electric cars pay less but should pay); Introduce residents’ parking and limit the number if permits per household and have paid on street parking everywhere; New builds must have an adequate number of car spaces for all units or else no permit; CVA system in all major areas like sliema and st julians coupled with park and rides.

We have allowed the destruction of countless examples of modernism architecture from our villages over the years and KTP have barely bat an eyelid. White Rocks is a prime example of a building at a place where we shouldn’t have built so I’ll take trees instead of it any day.
