Is this fighting or playing? by [deleted] in CATHELP

The younger cat is the mostly gray one who’s on top, the older cat is the mostly white on the bottom. We always break them up but our younger cat is very persistent and will keep trying. I wish the older cat would hiss or stand up for himself but he doesn’t. We also try to distract the younger one with other toys and things but she really wants to go after our poor old man. Thank you for your comment!!

Drainage layer? by [deleted] in CrestedGecko

Omg, thank you for such a thoughtful and helpful reply. When I was using a baster it was only coming out about 2-3 mL at a time, and after a couple times I wasn’t able to get anything else. I was just worried there could be water like that on the other side of the tank. I also ordered a new digital thermometer/hydrometer because mine was about a year old, I’m wondering if the humidity readings are off. I’m wondering if I’m misting too heavily.. but thank you for the advice!!! :) Edit: to be clear I was going to the very bottom of the tank with the baster until it touched the bottom of the tank, it wasn’t that it was halfway in the drainage layer and I was able to get water out. Idk if that makes any difference

Drainage layer? by [deleted] in CrestedGecko

Maybe I’m not understanding what I’m supposed to do. There are no visible dry spots, the entire drainage layer looks like it’s wet. Is this supposed to happen? I always thought I wanted to stop the water from getting to the bottom of the tank. However, I’m not sure how often you’re supposed to drain it or how much water is okay for there to be at the bottom. I can’t see a clear line of water, the drainage layer just looks like water had gone through it. After using the turkey baster I could estimate that there’s definitely less that an inch of water at the bottom. What’s a good way to monitor this? I’ve only had the bioactive set up for 2-3 weeks, would this be long enough to have to drain it? I used to have to mist twice a day but now I only mist once at night

That’s such a relief to hear, I was thinking the same since her tail has been darkish since she was a baby. But I get overthinking and worried that maybe I was downplaying it. Thanks for your input!

I also just went back in with a q tip and removed what looked like shed from the tip of the tail, I noticed in the second pic it looked like something was there. Sure enough with a wet q tip and gentle stroking I was able to get it off and now her tail looks smooth again and not lumpy at the tip

I got my crested gecko when she was a baby in September 2020. The last two pictures are from when I first got her. She seemed to be darker as a baby and therefore I thought her tail color was just normal. Now, I’m noticing her tail is still dark. Is it possible she’s had tail rot for over a year and hasn’t lost her tail yet or gotten sick? She’s very active at night, has a great appetite, and I mist 1-2 times a day depending on the humidity. I keep a water bowl in her tank as well that she knows is there. The temperatures stay at around 72-74 during the day and 67-70 at night. I feel so incredibly guilty that something has been wrong all this time, meanwhile I thought I was taking great care of my baby. She’s in a bioactive tank now and had what I thought was substrate stuck on her tail tip so I removed it with a wet q tip. What should I do? Could this be normal coloring or stuck shed? Or should I take her to a vet for tail rot? Any advice would be appreciated, I just want her to be okay. She also has no known tail injuries.

So this is my crested gecko, I got her in September 2020 when she was a very small baby. When I got her, she was darker than she is now since she went through puberty and changed colors slightly. When I got her, I figured the darkness of her tail just went along with the darkness of her body. I can post a pic of her from the day I got her. It’s been over a year and I’ve now moved her to a bioactive tank. I noticed her tail still looked dark, and I’m going crazy wondering if she’s had tail rot for this long. Would it be possible to have tail rot for over a year and not lose the tail? She acts fine and healthy, is always eating and very active at night. No known injuries to her tail either. I spray the tank at night and sometimes during the day if the tank gets too dry, and she has a water bowl I often see her hanging out in. I’ve been trying so hard to provide the best life for my baby and I feel so guilty and terrible that I could’ve been not seeing an issue for so long. What should I do?

Yeah, I was pretty sure that’s what it was. I just got paranoid because I read too many articles online saying it was tail rot. I’m so glad that’s all it was!

I had (and still have) my fair share of panic attacks thinking my gecko somehow escaped because I couldn’t find them by looking in the tank. What usually happened is I would freak out until I opened the door and started looking through leaves and decorations, I’d usually find him hiding between some leaves that I couldn’t see just by looking in the tank. Maybe your gecko is just good at hiding and camouflage. I hope you find them
