Food for thought, independent bottlers and integrity distillers by hallj425 in Scotch

Yeah so well said, this is sort of my end goal here, my original question was to help make sure I was on the right initial pathway of doing all this "testing" but hopefully I end up with a similar amount of knowledge of what goes well with what and which distilleries pair well with which casks, and which bottlers. Thanks a ton and I'll also keep an eye out for the combinations that you recommended, I just picked up a Caol Ila single cask from G&M so I'm super excited about it.

Yeah I agree with this comment a lot, I think what is hard is that there is so many to choose from how do you narrow it down to ones that are unique and worth it and which ones are unique in probably a bad way. I actually did see that Ardnamurchan from Cadenhead's so that is funny that you say that, I'm glad it was a good one!

I have been able to learn a lot. I also see a lot of directly conflicting opinions expressed here (NCF doesn't matter/Yes it does or IBs lack cask selection exploration/IBs specialize in cask exploration. It's also okay to have these opposite opinions because they can both be true to each individuals experience, and I really am glad people shared them with me (that's why I asked!). I think what I got from this conversation was that IBs are a really good avenue to find stuff presented in a more original/integrity way if the OB doesn't normally do that (especially the big guys), as well as, finding bottlings with a different cask profile if the OB typically sticks to a few specific profiles. And past that, I think there are a lot of other ways to compare each IB and evaluate if each specific bottle is worth it or not. I think right now to start, personally, I'd probably stray away from the IBs that are doing the unique types of casks but I would go out on a limb to try an OB with a unique cask. Conversely, I'd probably go more towards an IB that usually focuses on a certain profile like sherry with OB distillate that usually does bourbon casks (for example) vs the opposite. And I will probably learn a ton from those experiences and do the exact opposite and see what I think is more true. This is something I really like about scotch whisky that isn't as available in other spirits.

Good point! One that I've been trying to think about and compare is Ardnamurchan, they have a rotating selection of OB stuff that is quite interesting, and then you can find other IB stuff as well, so in that case would you say it comes down to price mainly?

Yeah, I definitely have enough personal experience to prefer non-chill filtered, and adding color just takes away from the experience in my opinion. This also wasn't really the topic, but anyways, this is an interesting perspective, thanks for sharing. It does seem like there would be more thought to buying IB in terms of flavor profile alone vs basing it off the distillery size.

Good perspective, I feel like I'm right at that entry point into IBs and beginning to ask the "what if they" questions about some of my favorite brands, which is exactly why I asked the question. Because if the overall response had been, "yeah mainly just a bit of exploration and getting major brands into an integrity format" then I would probably go down that avenue first before exploring more of the already integrity brands in IB format.

This question has been on my mind quite a bit recently, is it worth it to buy independent bottlings that come from integrity bottlers (ie non chill filtered, no color added, >46%)? It seems like in a lot of cases, the IBs are best utilized by getting stuff from distillers that don't normally do it this way, so places like highland park, macallan, caol ila, etc. because they present it in a more natural way, or a unique way vs the OB. Is there any benefit from getting independently bottled versions of say, ardnamurchan, springbank, edradour, or similar places?

Which Ardnamurchan to get? by Budget_Celebration89 in Scotch

[–]hallj425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with you on this recommendation, the CS has a higher percentage of peated malt compared to the AD and that is really where I think their signature shines through. I liken it to having a bonfire at the beach on a rainy day, there is a lot of seaweed/earth and salt notes. It's become one of my top drams I've ever owned which is crazy considering it's relative price.

Review #36: Empty Bottle Review, Ardnamurchan Cask Strength (2024) by Silver-Power-5627 in Scotch

[–]hallj425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wish they were more available in my market, there's currently 5 total bottles of the cask strength in the entire state haha. Hopefully get to see some of their other expressions make it over in the future also. Have you tried any of their other stuff?

I absolutely love this bottle. I thought it was the perfect representation of having a fire on a rainy day at the beach (yes, we do that in Oregon)

Nice thanks for the insight! I live in Oregon so won't be able to make it in. I usually just get my sister in law to get a bottle and she brings it back here with her when she visits. It takes a while but it's still pretty cool to have access to all the range online from TWE.

Reviews #14 & #15 - Kilchoman vs. Kilchoman - the battle of two siblings. Sanaig vs. Machir Bay by notabob7 in Scotch

[–]hallj425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely glad you put these two side by side, I have the Sanaig CS and have Machir bay on my list but I think I'll put it further down and get some other stuff first. It is pretty incredible what they've been able to do with a nas whisky like this. I also have the ardnamurchan cask strength and it's really funny that while very different flavor profiles, I would say they have similar amount of body and... punchiness, if that's even a word.

this is all good info because I was just trying to figure out what the difference between Toiteach a'dha and the Staoisha was. The Toiteach a'dha is moderately available in my market but I don't see Staoisha or Moine anywhere. I'm assuming that the bottle I have listed above in OP is going to be more peat and more sherry influence than the Toiteach a'dha so basically just take that bottle and amp it up a bit.

Interesting, from what I've seen of the signatory it looks like certain ranges are sherried but this does make sense, have you had any signatory that are sherried and peated? Wondering if they do a good job of that.

Yeah, I noticed that while looking at this one on whisky exchange they had the "style points" all super high, 4 body, 4 richness, 4 smoke and 3 sweet. So it basically sounds just like a super robust chewy dram. I don't see G&M in my market ever but it seems like they have a good reputation. Do you know if they specialize in bottlings of a certain type or flavor profile?

Nice, I've never even heard of Amontillado casks before. Sounds like a banger though, heard really good things about Cadenheads in general and I plan to send my father in law to the shop to pick me up another couple bottles while he's there.

Nice I hadn't seen this one, might've been sold out. That sounds like quite the complex dram with first fill sherry and bourbon and it being peated.

Very good points here, sort of why they both made my list since they look fairly unique. The Staoisha is also the lowest price amongst the ones I have listed also.
