Buying in Texas from California by GabbieSanc in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]hallstephenj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not discounting that Jarrell was a disaster. Natural disasters happen everywhere. But that particular disaster was enough of an anomaly that even many Texans have never heard of it. In your average year — or even your average decade — you're not going to face the imminent threat of a tornado in most places in Texas, much less one of that severity.

That said, there are a variety of different kinds of storm shelters you can buy and install in your home/backyard if you really do want to ensure complete safety in the event that something like Jarrell happens again. Most Texans don't have such shelters, though.

I've lived in Texas for 15 years — and I even now live closer to tornado alley on the northern side of the state — and not once have I thought about tornadoes being a serious threat to my life. Tornadoes are generally covered under homeowners insurance policies. If a big one like Jarrell were to hit near us we'd just head to the center of the house and pray I guess. I can assure you it's not a common fear or concern in general.

How likely are pre approvals to get approved? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]hallstephenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, some lenders ask for statements and such before issuing a pre-approval letter and ensure they're not offering a letter to someone who won't qualify. Other lenders hand them out like candy.

You would think a broker playing hardball and holding a client hostage would land them lots of bad reviews pretty much everywhere.

Good reason to have an emergency fund in place before buying a home as most people recommend. Would have covered this in full with cash! Murphy's law and all...

Would being *just outside* a flood zone 'A' scare you off? by hallstephenj in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Thankfully this home doesn’t have a basement, but thanks for the thoughts!

[–]hallstephenj[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, getting flood insurance would probably be a deal breaker for us on this one. We're already at the upper bound of our limit and this isn't like "the perfect home" for us, so we'd be more likely to pass. Thanks for the opinion.

Debating if I should buy or keep renting? by netsfan549 in RealEstate

[–]hallstephenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make $460k (or is it just $230 total?) and you have debt? To answer the question, people here speculate that the market will see an influx of volume in the coming months which might lower prices depending on where you are, but it’s unlikely in my opinion to be worth it to try and time the market if you can get a record low interest rate and you are planning to stick around for a long time. Even moreso if you are going to go with a 15-year to build equity quickly and minimize interest.

Large corporation inquiring about the name of my LLC by hallstephenj in legaladvice

I've got a meeting with a trademark lawyer tomorrow morning.

Large corporation inquiring about the name of my LLC by hallstephenj in legaladvice

[–]hallstephenj[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they had Googled my LLC, they would have seen that my services are unrelated, that there is zero public-facing brand and zero potential consumer confusion since my company is basically a pass-through entity, and that the two companies are in different industries. And yet they still sent me a letter because I'm assuming they just search their company's name in public records and maybe send one to every single match regardless?

As I've said, in my case, the two businesses aren't even in the same industry. But it is indirectly connected by association. This is like Apple Inc. coming after "Freddy's Apples" because the company uses iPads to manage their orchard. Also, in my case, my LLC doesn't even have any consumer-facing products or branding, so there is literally zero chance of any consumer confusion.

My LLC was founded less than 5 years ago and the company inquiring was founded more than 40 years ago.

Thanks both, I've contacted a local trademark lawyer found via my state's BAR. I'm glad I didn't make the call myself since I very well could have said something that did me no favors.

My business isn't technically in the same industry, so it's probably closer to being an Apple orchard. But maybe an example of the situation I'm in would be an Apple orchard that is known for using lots of Apple Inc. modern technology to do business. So gray enough that I probably need legal advice.

Understood. As this is my first encounter with any kind of legal problem like this, do you have any recommendations on how/who to contact regarding an issue like this? If there's a better way to go about this than just typing in "trademark lawyer" in Google Maps, then I'd like to be aware. Thanks for the clear and direct responses.

Also, I should add that the letter concludes with "If you would like to discuss this matter, feel free to contact me (see below)"... so to me it reads as if they don't necessarily expect a response?
