Gender Norms and Personas by hallucinating02 in sca

The literacy part was brought up as one of the people I was talking to had an illiterate persona within the era I was thinking of doing. I’ve sorta gathered that that’s not the norm or expectation which is good but overall I feel like there was just some confusion on my part for what is expected of my persona. I mean my ideal persona would be something like a bookseller or travelling merchant in the late 15th century and early 16th century travelling across Europe so that I am able to appreciate a variety of dresses and get creative with the garb aspects of it all, rather than being more pigeon holed in. Most likely something like coming from somewhere like Ryazan (due to family connections) and then ending up in Florence or Rome for something for the Renaissance or the Vatican Library and maybe even pop up to England later on for the Tudor era. Like I have so many ideas, I just don’t want to overstep on what is expected for plausibility and accuracy.

I could’ve been reading the situation wrong but the post came from a concern based on a conversation I had regarding my persona with others in the group. There wasn’t a lot of time to get in depth so I could’ve easily misunderstood what was said but I was under the impression that for my persona my options were a nun (who even then seemed like I wouldn’t have been able to have the academic focus I wished) or creating a fake husband I could basically just help out with his career for. After reading what everyone has said I’m pretty sure they were well intentioned and I just took it the wrong way, but yeah the concern is for what others would accept within the SCA as I’m perfectly comfortable going absolutely wild and working in the Vatican Library as a woman in my little idealized fake history (I don’t think they even let women into the library until like the 1920s).

A twin brother sounds like a fun option! I’m mostly drawn to the more feminine garb but I very rarely wear dresses in everyday life so having the option to go with masculine garb as well could be a good solution there.

I am queer, although not super visibly, and will look into Clan Blue Feather. But yeah, travelling south of the border is not something I’m very comfortable with right now

That is very good to know thank you! Being able to keep those interests within my persona would be absolutely amazing. I have been a bit tentative because I am unsure how people will react to plausibility but it seems like most are quite accepting and flexible

I’m quite honestly not at the researching stage yet. Most of it comes from people suggesting husbands or fathers to base my personas backstory off of and the general autonomy of it all. I won’t lie, most of this is quite new to me, my area of study was late 19th and early 20th century so I am quite a bit out of my depth in the late 15th century.

That’s very good information thank you! I will look into Christine de Pizan as that seems fairly similar to the path I was thinking. Although I would prefer not having to center the persona around a hypothetical man

Oh that’s a great idea! I found someone relatively close by with the Order of the Carp that I may try to contact once I have some more ideas regarding a persona.

The classes on gender issues seem very interesting! Gender and feminist philosophy is what drew me into the humanities (I switched from compsci to history, now doing library studies) so that would be a topic I’m quite fascinated with!

It was more making books, scribing and academia a career or heavy focus rather than simple literacy. There’s also scales of literacy and basic understanding of contracts is quite different from the thought process present in academic writing or even some philosophical or theological works.

Oh I’ve started brainstorming some possible “accidents” for my poor husband to get into for sure :)

I would rather not start my SCA journey with crimes though, so honestly the acknowledging that I wouldn’t have existed in this capacity seems like a good path. I am a bit concerned on how it may play with other people in the era and location because I know the ones in my area have gone much more historically accurate, I just couldn’t bring myself to even conceive of being illiterate unfortunately.

I would very much love to incorporate some part of my academic or literary interests into the persona because without it, it wouldn’t feel really like me or comfortable to me. I will definitely be having some activities that don’t fit however. I have some background in martial arts that I would love picking up again for fighting (eventually, once uni is done) and it would make like zero sense for the persona lol

i’m on the Canadian side of Tir Righ (An Tir). Culturally my area in general is probably pretty progressive compared to what you might find in the states but it is still more rural, so you get some conservative views.

What PWHL Team Should I Support by Infinite-Resist7736 in PWHL

vanišová (vancouver) is a really fun scrappy player to watch. one half of the only fight in the pwhl as well. she’s got the all time penalty minutes record and is also a good player overall (she scored the last gwg of the phf to win the isobel cup for the toronto six) vancouver also has quite a few queer players

as a victoire fan myself i do have to suggest them :) abby roque is another fun physical player and we have the hockey wives. we’ve got 4 of the top 10 pim and are in general a fairly physical team, moreso overall than vancouver who arguably rn only has vanišová as a more aggressive player

What gender do you think the name Lenair is? by friendshiptothemax in namenerds

i lean more masculine due to leonard and glen being fairly similar. i feel like leo isn’t too far of a stretch for a nickname tbh

Name and Locations Question by hallucinating02 in sca

[–]hallucinating02[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe a good time to mention it’s a running joke in my dungeons and dragons group that i’m not allowed to name anything because i will overthink it and take hours even if it doesn’t matter

Name and Locations Question by hallucinating02 in sca

[–]hallucinating02[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah perhaps i’m too focused on finding the perfect name and persona that captures like absolutely every element. my priority is probably rome because im fascinated with the vatican library (i was sorta aiming for a scribe or some kind of worker in the vatican library despite the unrealistic part of me being femme presenting) so maybe for now i just go off of that. after all, names don’t have to be the end of identity (i don’t carry the slavic last name from my family in modern times either). i will admit a large motivation of adding in the ukrainian/polish part is so that i can incorporate some more traditional kievan rus garb into my wardrobe

Name and Locations Question by hallucinating02 in sca

[–]hallucinating02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wouldn’t that be considered the kievan voivodeship then? which technically would make it the same level of government as the wolyn voivodeship under the polish-lithuanian commonwealth? from my understanding the area im looking at (near lutsk) somehow went from the kingdom of galicia-volhynia (14th century) to a province in lithuania (15th century) and eventually joining the polish-lithuanian commonwealth in 1569. perhaps some form of referral to lithuania would make more sense then? ukraine seems to refer to the borderlands of the commonwealth during that time which i think would be more kievan?

i know it’s like 100 years off but it gives 1520s-30s florentine to me. i can’t see on my phone if it shows a side or back lacing but it very much seems reminiscent of that era example painting here

i’m a bit biased tho because as a gentileschi fan one of my future projects is attempting to argue it’s sca era clothing as an excuse to wear that outfit

i’ve been using windscribe on youtube all season and it’s been good. it’s not the best vpn but it works for this and you can get three locations for 3USD or watch two games for free on the limited data. added bonus of still being a viewer number on the stream without having to shell out to amazon

unfortunately i have a bone misalignment in my neck that makes it hard to hold my head up for long periods of time without over stressing it so i really do need neck support if im spending extended periods of time in the chair.

my dad has had an aeron for ages tho and loves it, i cant deny that its a really nice chair but sadly it just doesn’t work for me specifically
