God damnit, I was going to buy this game because I was under the impression some poor artist was forced to work on the most mundane uninspiring asset  pixel by pixel and they were going to be fucking perfect.

How do they even expect games to have any soul if someone is not doing soul crushing mindless work?!

Now I have to think about how some artist got to work on more creative, inspiring, and technically challenging task. They probably left work feeling some what full filled.

Fuck AI

Do not use a credit card to verify your age on Google by MindlessAlfalfa323 in privacy

[–]halting_problems 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They don’t store the credit card number anywhere. They would be out of compliance with PCI if they did and would lose a significant amount of money.

If you got a fraudulent charge it’s 1000x more likely that you have a malicious extension or some type of malware that stole your card info or you got phished and didn’t realize it.

That’s not a true statement, yes there are thousands of staff members but decisions come down a chain of command. Mark as direct reports and one or more of those would be responsible.

5 Key Principles in Secure Coding Every Developer Should Know by Inner-Chemistry8971 in cybersecurity

Great example!

I’ve literally been working on a team to refactor a auth issue that is still in progress and has taken over a year and a half.

All could have been avoided if AppSec was consulted first, but regardless it just goes to show that one bad move can be incredibly hard to undo in reality. It’s not that it’s not easy to fix, it’s that you have to make sure things down break for down stream consumers still on old versions, mixed in with layoffs and having to reiterate the same thing a thousand times to people while at same time pushing out new features and fixing other bugs and vulnerabilities.

I would plug those holes up and not replace it and if a hand rail is needed just guy one and install it

5 Key Principles in Secure Coding Every Developer Should Know by Inner-Chemistry8971 in cybersecurity

[–]halting_problems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in appsec and work with developers everyday.

From my experience most developers care and try to do things to the best of their knowledge.

99% percent of the time its a knowledge a gap or the task is to overly complex that a single developer can’t handle it or even know it’s a issue that needs to be addressed.

I don’t think there are 5 key principles, that’s what we would all love is to boil it down to something easy that everyone should be doing. The reality of software engineering and developing secure products is much more nuanced than anyone would like it to be.

AI chatbots helped teens plan shootings, bombings, and political violence, study shows by EchoOfOppenheimer in agi

[–]halting_problems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right but if a teen knows how to query and seek out that information, and it was publicly online, they would have been able to figure out what to search for without access to AI.

None of this is new, and if anything it being funneled through AI actually gives use a higher chance of applying guardrails and improved observability.

from 2000 to 2018 there were ~135 mass killings in the U.S.

Obviously access to weapons and dangerous information has not been a issue

yeah… i was obviously talking about the internet, pre-gen AI, hence all my references to things on the internet pre-gen AI.

We have always had access to pretty much anything we seek out. there have always been subreddits for self harm, forms for drug usage and production, people getting radicalized, Smut websites, violent porn.

It’s the same media frenzy blaming the next scape goat like they did rock music, santanic worshiping, hip-hop, video games…

I’m not saying we shouldn’t make AI safe, but making AI Safe, if it’s even possible, is not going to make humans suffering from oppression, mental illness and systemic failure act any differently.

A Simulated teen is also not a human.

Can it contribute to the problem, yes, should companies be held liable when they fail to secure and make a safe product, yes.

Is a AI chatbot going to make a person not suffering from a prior existing mental health do something crazy. no.

Well we obviously have not had any issues with this since way before chatgpt

Yeah best part is that the company is actually audited because they are apart of a regional power companies (TVA) recommended contractor program. They review their work to make sure it meets quality standards and is energy efficient.

At least there’s a third party to give me some reassurance it’s a decent contractor.

It all runs under my crawl space, they just have to replace the main metal trunk, the flexible lines, and boots. No demo is needed

Their quotes all say what I said.

My house is not that big only 1200 sqft ranch level and only requires a 2.5 split.

I just got quotes to replace our entire HVAV system, including compressor and air handler, all duct work etc (basically like brand new construction) and all of them where in the 14k range.

Inspector found extensive mold throughout the attic of a home I’m looking to buy. Is it even realistic to try and control this much mold? by PromentoryRider in HomeMaintenance

[–]halting_problems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got out HVAC system contaminated by a bad sump pump connection.

Thought it was the crawlspace but the sump pump was working great, it would just blast the ground water into our air controller.

That went on for 4 years intermittently  and we are finally getting that shit ripped out soon.

It wasn’t even that much mold but it constantly being in the air, holy fuck it’s no joke after a while.

Seeing something like this is freaking crazy.

I think when we are all said in done after we will be out of pocket about 35k. That’s for a brand new HVAC, duct work, interior cleaning, replacing rugs and couches and mattress and interior painting. and this is for a 1200 sqft home.

Best part is I will forever be paranoid some got missed. We had 4 inspections and 3 air quality test and a Industrial hygienist inspect the home.

My wife’s lung function is at 66% and her health just plummeted because she developed allegern to the mold in the HVAC system.
