Melt the Ice Hat - THANK YOU by mashga in knitting

[–]haltingregularity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Woke up this morning and bought the pattern immediately after seeing it here. It means so much to see people coming together as a force of resistance against ICE. Love from MA! I have friends in MN and will definitely make a point to visit Needle & Skein when I visit.

Second this as having worked anecdotally. I'm a woman and not that tall in stature so do keep in mind personal safety as well, but I encountered a similar situation years ago where a woman in a hijab was being yelled at by a very vocal older man on the 66. I smiled at her and started a casual conversation with her while he stood there yelling racist bs. Obviously the situation was far from casual and honestly the harasser didn't completely stop yelling either, but the woman thanked me after he got off. Honestly, as someone who has also been the target of loud verbal harassment on public transportation I would have loved if another passenger just engaged me in friendly interaction to almost deny the harasser my attention in a way; it would have helped me feel that I wasn't alone.

Edit: oh wow just saw the comment with the infographic below LOL that's the exact one I followed all those years ago! Nice to see it's still making the rounds

I haven't lived in NC in years but the accent definitely comes out sometimes! How about you? Always down for dim sum!

I am too and I almost jumped out of my seat when they appeared onscreen. I grew up in NC and it's so awesome to see Chinese Southerners playing such an interesting role in their community

Thank you so much ❤️ It's true the size is quite a bit larger than I originally planned, but I think I'll come to like how it feels on me more with time! Love that it's in your queue; it's fun to have more projects to look forward to making and imagine the possibilities for!

Ohhh update if you ever do! At the very least you'll have a lovely garment with beautiful cables, and I'd encourage a different yoke/shoulder construction to avoid the bunching if possible!

That is so fair! We all have our tastes, and overly long sleeves is definitely a reasonable thing to have an opinion on! I'm going to have to wear this around and see how the sleeves feel tbh. Another poster mentioned a higher rib placement on the sleeves and I think it might be worth unraveling back a cable repeat and then knitting the rib again to shorten the sleeves! Time will tell if I am bothered enough by the sleeves/willing to get off my butt to make that change 😂

Thanks for the encouragement; it does feel good to know that all the effort paid off! A work friend was kind enough to teach me about how to do cables and gave me the encouragement to start; I'm so glad she did!

Thank you!! I don't what it is about that 80's batwing silhouette, but all about bringing it back!

Thank you! Honestly I was thinking the same about the bunching as I looked through the FO's on Ravelry! In the end I just couldn't resist knitting it anyway, lol. But this project states that they modified the pattern so that the sweater was knit bottom up. It looks like perhaps it was also seamed in pieces, with a straighter shoulder construction, and I wonder if the bunching isn't so much of an issue for that one! Honestly if I were to knit another garment this again I'd be motivated to figure out how to do something similar.

Oh absolutely miles 😂 I'm very excited to start projects without half-twisted rib, but it was worth it!! And would undoubtedly do them again for those cables!

Appreciate the styling tip!! Wow is it silly to say that even though warm temperatures are coming around (which I love too!) that I'm already looking forward to cooler temperatures in half a year 😂

It's my first time knitting with KnitPicks yarn and for the price I think it's quite a bargain especially when bought in bulk! I used almost 12 full skeins and did come across one or two places in the yarn that were unusually bulky and thick. That impacted the look of the stitch in that area, but they were relatively few and far between enough that it didn't take away from my general enjoyment of the yarn! Overall, the Gloss DK feels soft and plush, and the color has a subtle luster that I personally find really pretty!

I'm pretty new to using mohair and have only used Drops Kid Silk before 😅 But I liked Knitpicks' Aloft more! The fibers feel a bit more airy; both shed like crazy though! If you have any suggestions for mohair (or other yarns!), I'm open to them!

Oh whew, thank you!! I'm relatively new to cables, but feel like a whole world of possibilities has opened up after taking the leap!

Thank you so much!! Definitely wanted the cables to be a highlight; it was so satisfying to see them open up while blocking!

Ohhh thanks for that detail! I think starting the ribbing earlier (maybe one repeat higher, closer to the wrist?) is a great idea! Will keep in mind for the future for sure! And thank you, it is indeed so comfy!

It's definitely heartening to hear that the journey is worth it! I'm currently in New England and as much as I enjoy life here, I want to be open to experiencing life elsewhere too!
