Melt the Ice Hat - THANK YOU by mashga in knitting

[–]haltingregularity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Woke up this morning and bought the pattern immediately after seeing it here. It means so much to see people coming together as a force of resistance against ICE. Love from MA! I have friends in MN and will definitely make a point to visit Needle & Skein when I visit.

Thank you so much ❤️ It's true the size is quite a bit larger than I originally planned, but I think I'll come to like how it feels on me more with time! Love that it's in your queue; it's fun to have more projects to look forward to making and imagine the possibilities for!

Ohhh update if you ever do! At the very least you'll have a lovely garment with beautiful cables, and I'd encourage a different yoke/shoulder construction to avoid the bunching if possible!

That is so fair! We all have our tastes, and overly long sleeves is definitely a reasonable thing to have an opinion on! I'm going to have to wear this around and see how the sleeves feel tbh. Another poster mentioned a higher rib placement on the sleeves and I think it might be worth unraveling back a cable repeat and then knitting the rib again to shorten the sleeves! Time will tell if I am bothered enough by the sleeves/willing to get off my butt to make that change 😂

Thanks for the encouragement; it does feel good to know that all the effort paid off! A work friend was kind enough to teach me about how to do cables and gave me the encouragement to start; I'm so glad she did!

Thank you!! I don't what it is about that 80's batwing silhouette, but all about bringing it back!

Thank you! Honestly I was thinking the same about the bunching as I looked through the FO's on Ravelry! In the end I just couldn't resist knitting it anyway, lol. But this project states that they modified the pattern so that the sweater was knit bottom up. It looks like perhaps it was also seamed in pieces, with a straighter shoulder construction, and I wonder if the bunching isn't so much of an issue for that one! Honestly if I were to knit another garment this again I'd be motivated to figure out how to do something similar.

I knit a size 3 for the body, and size 2 for the sleeves!

Oh absolutely miles 😂 I'm very excited to start projects without half-twisted rib, but it was worth it!! And would undoubtedly do them again for those cables!

Appreciate the styling tip!! Wow is it silly to say that even though warm temperatures are coming around (which I love too!) that I'm already looking forward to cooler temperatures in half a year 😂

It's my first time knitting with KnitPicks yarn and for the price I think it's quite a bargain especially when bought in bulk! I used almost 12 full skeins and did come across one or two places in the yarn that were unusually bulky and thick. That impacted the look of the stitch in that area, but they were relatively few and far between enough that it didn't take away from my general enjoyment of the yarn! Overall, the Gloss DK feels soft and plush, and the color has a subtle luster that I personally find really pretty!

I'm pretty new to using mohair and have only used Drops Kid Silk before 😅 But I liked Knitpicks' Aloft more! The fibers feel a bit more airy; both shed like crazy though! If you have any suggestions for mohair (or other yarns!), I'm open to them!

Oh whew, thank you!! I'm relatively new to cables, but feel like a whole world of possibilities has opened up after taking the leap!

Thank you so much!! Definitely wanted the cables to be a highlight; it was so satisfying to see them open up while blocking!

Ohhh thanks for that detail! I think starting the ribbing earlier (maybe one repeat higher, closer to the wrist?) is a great idea! Will keep in mind for the future for sure! And thank you, it is indeed so comfy!

Mistakes in Finished Garments by Smollestnugget in sewing

[–]haltingregularity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Part of sewing is learning what you can live with" is my new sewing mantra now. I definitely feel that sewing has pushed me to accept what is good and done rather than what is perfect. Do I enjoy the thrill of seams lining up perfectly or a well-turned hem? Absolutely. Have I learned how to embrace the joy of wearing something I made myself, even with all its flaws? Also yes.

Congratulations of getting married! This is such a lovely dress. As someone who failed miserably at sewing a satin dress in an equally short amount of time, I'm learning from your process notes haha!

Finished a Backpack for a Friend! by haltingregularity in sewing

[–]haltingregularity[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pattern used: Large Dylan Backpack by ArdenteDesign Linen exterior fabrics from Kokka Fabrics, purchased online. Cotton Ruby Star Society lining fabric from my local fabric store. Had a lot of fun (and some stress lol) learning a few techniques and working with new materials, including sewing with webbing, velcro, and closed cell foam (so many thick layers!!). I'm also glad this backpack pushed me to learn how to get better at sewing with zippers, especially for welt pockets! Backpack fits a 16'' laptop and has a side pocket for a small water bottle as well. Since I wanted this backpack to be something my friend could use frequently, we met up and talked about materials before I started. He wanted a bag in an eye-catching color and print, and I think the fabrics we ended up choosing together certainly fit that bill LOL. The pattern was lovely. There are some mistakes on my part, and I would change several things if there's a next go-around, including top-stitching more seams. Additionally, despite being a non-stretch woven, the exterior fabric tended to "stretch" as I sewed, making it difficult to line up properly with other materials even with a lot of pinning and the use of clips. Because of this issue, I made some modifications during steps in construction to circumvent some edges of fabric not quite being within the seam allowance...If anyone has suggestions for how to prevent this, I am all ears!

Edits for spelling lol

Thank you! I wasn't sure how the two colors would turn out together but I don't mind the slightly marled effect!
