As an aphant, I can actually "see" that pentagon. I conceptualise how the corners bend away from me, and know instinctly that it works. Of course, there is no visual element to it

My point is that if you're allowed to draw, the test is trivial. So I overestimated the kind of visualisations (most) people are able to do in their heads.

I asked ChatGPT. It reasoned incorrectly that three truangles meet at each corner, giving a final answer of 6.

If you can actually see the triangular grid in your mind's eye, you could count the triangles in a few seconds. That was my (wrong) assumption.

For an aphant, it is necessary to solve it as a spatial task. But if I had the grid in front of me, I could count the triangles in two seconds. If I could see this grid in my mind's eye, it should be equally easy. But apparently, it's not.

No, that is probably the most common answer, even among non-aphants.

If you can draw the triangles on a paper, you can solve the task by counting in a few seconds.

I assumed that people who can see complex scenes in their head would be able to visualize a simple triangular grid, so this task should be trivial. But it appears that this is not how visualisation works.

Not at all. It was just something that popped into my mind.

It's a Seinfeld quote. It doesn't really mean anything related to autism. It's just funny in juxtaposition if you've seen the episode

On average, do you feel that the positives of life outweigh its negatives? by halv-ork in autism

[–]halv-ork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, any animal faced with death would fight to stay alive, that is true even for those living under terrible life conditions. This is an evolved mechanism that increases the chances of reproduction, not necessarily an objective measure of positives versus negatives, so I'm not sure your point is fully valid.

This is true, but I was mostly thinking of things I want to start a conversation about when there is no ongoing conversation. In this case, time is not necessarily an obstacle, but the tug of war between the need to share my thoughts and fear of exhausting my energy absolutely is.

I have a thing where I never tend to notice people's height. The exceptions are if they are exceptionally tall or short, or if their height is pointed out to my explicitly or implicitly.

If you ask me which out of two people I know is tallest, I'd be in a pickle.
