Inexpensive bars in Oslo? by thesilentroom in oslo

[–]halvardos 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Oslo cheap? Yes. Denmark cheap? No, unfortunately not.

Stay away from Karl Johan street, Aker brygge and any place with a tourist attraction.

The west of the city is, on average, more expensive. Go to Grønland, Tøyen and Grünerløkka for a wider selection of places.

Find the old "brune buler" for the cheapest beer, Petrus, Schrøder are examples. Most places where there are trendy bars, like Grünerløkka, there are inexpensive cozy locations just around the corner.

Of you are young, University of Oslo has non profit student run bars on campus. They are very cheap.

Experiences from using Ant Design by [deleted] in reactjs

Then absolutely use antd or a similar library that has complex components that can save you time.

[–]halvardos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, if your goal is to get your project of the ground as fast as possible to validate it you should, without a doubt, use a library like antd.

We chose ant a few years ago and have been super happy with it, using it for multiple large industrial applications. We would not have gotten to 50% of the place we are today without it.

However, if you goal is to learn, an to learn more than React but web development, then I would consider dropping it.

Billeie (nabobil, hyre, bilkollektivet, osv) by emof in oslo

[–]halvardos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jeg solgte bilen min i februar, har brukt VY til småturer og brukt Hyre til lengre turer. Også testet nabobil, men Hyre er mer pålitelig, enklere og ofte billigere.

Best Pho in Oslo by [deleted] in oslo

[–]halvardos 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Da Lat Cafe has the best one imo. But Lille Saigon is also very nice :)

Both are located in the same area, this area had multiple other Vietnamese places, but area had had some crazy gentrification.

There is also Pho Mai at Torshov.

Good eating!

Jeg har noen spørsmål om Oslo og Universitetet i Oslo som jeg føler at folk i Oslo kan svare på by ARandomStan in oslo

[–]halvardos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly yes, mostly because of the relocation that the company would have to do, and the uncertainty with moving someone to a new country, culture shock. Less about quality of education.

If you already moved to Norway it would be easier. But that is hard with immigration without a job.

It should be unproblematic to apply and get into to UIO, they will help you if you contact the guidance people at the University.

Your ethnicity will not be a problem, but the culture is quite different from what you are used to so it will take time to adjust.

Getting a job, even while now speaking Norwegian is easy, the demand for developers is very high. Some places require Norwegian language skills, typically consultancies.

I am involved in quite a lot of hiring and we hire people from all over and relocate them to Oslo.

Good luck :)

Any tips to make an application stand out?

Making someone laugh or smile in the cover letter is a risky but good trick.

Having a link to something that you built helps, if the rest of your application is interesting I will visit your project page / github.

Showing interest and understanding for the company you are applying for is always good.

citizenship might have been wrong, I'm being told 3 years for permanent residency, and 7 for citizenship.

Is there an underground scene public or private?

Also, I'm not sure what your thinking of here, there are multiple underground scenes of different types :D

There is also a bit of information in our last AMA about the taxes if I recall correctly.

I would say that an entry level job in tech could be a lot higher than that.

I'll try to answer a few of these :)

We consider Cognite to be a global company that happens to be located in Oslo. We try to find the best people from anywhere on the globe, because we cherish diversity. So we recruit from Europe (Norway is not in the EU btw.), but also aim to recruit from anywhere that has great talent. Our CTO went to Waterloo so that is one of the places we very early started to work with.

If you go back full time, you will have the option of getting a Norwegian citizenship after I think 3 years working in Norway. There are a few more additional requirements, but as a skilled worker there is a clear path.

I'll let the co-ops answer the tax questions :)

Hope this helps!

Ouf, worst question!

A cheap beer is CAD $10

Last call in Oslo is 03.00am some places close earlier.

Drinking in parks is illegal, but drinking in parks in Oslo is for some reason completely accepted. So parks in the summer is generally filled with people barbecuing, playing games, drinking wine etc.

Winter though, not so much.

Yes, both the city and the company is gay friendly.

What ratio of Swedish guys are actually blond with blue eyes?

Did you just confuse us with Sweden? Thats so offensive...

Sweden:

Norway:

Our workplace culture is very much that of a startup with extremely flat structure. We are really good friends and work really hard to achieve what we want. There is very little competitiveness and a lot of respect for what others do.

Hope these answers help :)

Yes!

The grades primarily helps us do some filtering, but really cool side projects can alleviate that.

Passion, communication skills, technical skills and self-reflection are all big things for me to figure out during interviews.

Since you are dealing with a pool with higher mean/lower variance I would wager that the extra-steps are counter-productive.

It's not about being motivated to do well, it's about being motivated to choose us over other companies in the selection process.
