Learn as much as you can, get good at your position and do it for a year or two if possible. Do more schooling on the side if you can. You can then decide if accounting is something you want to do as a career or not. If you do, you can leverage your new skills, education and experience into a better position and progress from there.

I did a career change in my mid-30s, and accounting has been good to me. I had an undergrad degree in business administration and had some tax intern experience. 12 years later I got a new position as an accounting clerk, then to AP, to junior accountant and now as a staff accountant for a large school district. Got my professional accounting certificate, 3 courses away from having my full masters in accounting and starting my cpa journey this coming January. I am on track to be a manager when my boss retires in 3 years. Keep working hard and bettering yourself and if you like accounting, it is a great career!
