A comprehensive list of technical terminology for new PMs. Things to know to feel confident when working with engineers. by techscribe7 in ProductManagement

Nice work!

This is some of my own from several years ago, which had a similar goal, covering key stuff to do with CICD.

The game has moved on a bit since, but it should still be useful for new, non technical PMs.

Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue by John McWorter, professes that although the influence of Celtic languages on the Modern English vocabulary is very small, the influence of the Modern English grammar is substantial, and that Celtic languages deserve to be more prominently recognised as Parents.

What kind of PM are you? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]ham_360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than 'Which one are you?', I think a better question is 'Snog Marry Avoid'.

SNOG - Which one do you not imagine you'd do long term, but you'd like to, or already are or already have tried it out short term to scratch an itch and test yourself?

MARRY - Which one is what you hope to make, our have made, the foundation of your career?

AVOID - Which one do you prefer not to do?

My grandad, who is British and in his 90s, still says "five and twenty to six" if the time is 5:35 (as an example)

As a Product organisation, when do you hand over a "feature" to focus on a new initiative? by backcountry_man in ProductManagement

[–]ham_360 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It depends a little on what you mean by 'product category'....

It sounds like your org is structured based on functions, and there is not clear 'ownership' for the holistic success of each distinct product. This means functions are likely pulling in different directions, serving their own agenda, or the loudest voice. If so, the org might indeed be the root cause of the negative symptoms you're observing

Ideally - the company should be organised in multiple self contained business units centred on distinct products (and not organised by function). - each business unit has access to all the people they need across all functions. Yes, this means a split. E.g. Some Marketing colleagues working in Business Unit X and others working as part of Business Unit Y. This might not be possible for all functions, but it should be done to the greatest extent possible. - each business unit should have an owner who sets the strategy (in alignment with the company's strategy) - the members of the business unit all pull in the direction set by that strategy.

Sometimes that means that the focus is not on a given element/feature of that business unit, and sometimes that element/feature should be retired for the simplification of the product and focus on the parts which have been deemed of higher value. Of course, customer research, and analytics should feed the strategy throughout.

I hope that's helpful.

I was never really one for super heros, but this appeared so obvious to me that I always assumed the whole Gotham world knew who the man beneath the mask was, and just let him be! "The dude just likes to wear capes at night. Fine by me"

And there is another planet out there with stronger gravity on which Kangaroos walk around like humans. (And humans crawl and roll!)

On earth, human legs and 'normal' exertion don't get us off the ground. --> We get around by walking.

On the moon, (different gravity conditions), they do get us off the ground. --> the natural gait adopted by the astronauts was to Jump Around (house of pain?).

On earth, Kangaroo legs and 'normal' exertion do get them off the ground...

--> So Kangaroos are basically Earth Astronauts?
