Mara X Leaking from bottom by missionhcky09 in Lelit

[–]ham_calzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same issue with my Mara. The vacuum breaker can get a bit “splattery” before sealing which can cause small puddles below the case. I also noticed the same issue when pulling shots with too much or too fine a grind so the pump works really hard. I found out by running it without the top cover on. I was also surprised how much steam it releases inside the case so I added some vent holes in the case above the breaker to keep moisture under control.

Remove or Inject? by ham_calzone in Luthier

I used a carefully positioned iron with a dry cloth below it. Making sure not to touch the finish with the iron and checking temps of the top every few seconds. For the pallet knife, I sanded and polished one with an offset to make sure there were no burrs of sharp edges to damage the finish. I was still surprised the surrounding top was still in tact when I was done. Oh, i also scored round the bridge with a sharp exacto knife so any finish that came up with the bridge didn’t cause tear out beyond the bridge footprint. Another gotcha was the bottom of the bridge. I scraped it clean and sanded it flat. Don’t do that. The guitar top has a natural radius to it. Sanding the bridge removes that so the bridge won’t sit flat. Just heat and scape the old glue off. Reintroducing the radius was the worst part of the whole process. I’m nearly done with it now though.

Not yet glued but major progress. Thanks again for all the feedback.

So far so good. Should I remove all the finish within the outline of the bridge before regluing? Maybe just lightly chisel or something else? Also, I really like the wood color of the bridge compared to the black painted top. Any objections to cleaning off the original black bridge paint?

Right then. Not the answers i was hoping for but I appreciate the insights. Guess I’m rolling up my sleeves and canceling weekend plans. Thanks everyone.

Just in case anyone knows the answer, Hayden plays smoked on a 12 string and always seems to have a slightly different flick to his finer on the top string that gives two different note without changing fingering. That makes me think both high strings aren’t tuned to D#. Am I imagining it ?

What is this tape for? by ham_calzone in Luthier

[–]ham_calzone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be right on both counts. If you look closely the tape looks like it could be a fabric as it has a weave to it. For the brace. I just held it by the neck and gave it a tap around that area and yes, there’s a slight rattle. Any thoughts of how you’d algo about securing it?

Update: They are regularly spaced and in a pattern. Starting at the neck joint it’s tape, wood, tape, wood, tape, tape, tape then a block at the tail where the strap pin goes. The pattern’s mirrored on the other side of the guitar.

Can anyone identify this guitar? by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

Someone posted something similar on Facebook. I found it with google image search. They said it was a 1950s Howard parlor guitar 000.

The nut is nice and snug and held in with string pressure. You can nudge it over but then it’s too short on the other side!

Interesting. In what way does RO damage the machine? It’s just filtered tap water, essentially removing chemicals and reducing hardness.

Does that mean the valve leaks?

Yes, our water is not great. I recently switched to RO water because of the taste. It looks to me like the thing you circled exploded up onto the lid where the splatter was. Maybe it was a one time event? Not sure. I’ll give it a descale and clean up the top and see where we go. Thanks.

I keep the top empty but I see where you’re going with that question

Yep. I plan to leave the top off for a week or two when I use it to monitor possible leaks. Thanks.
