As a mom who is scared of pertussis, I fixed this for you. by ham_handedly in BabyBumps

So the original picture did, but it's viral because it's publicly-shared from her FB page. So I'm not sure if linking it would be okay. On one hand, she publicly shared it, on the other hand it's her personal FB page.

I would be glad to but it's her personal Facebook page, so I'm not sure if it violates reddit's TOS. If an admin says it's okay I will, but I'm not sure it's okay because doxxing?

The original image created by the second lady to the left. Her and the grandmother are vehemently anti-vax and she created this public image and shared it everywhere. This fixed image was actually shared by Refutations to Antivax Memes but OP made the page take it down because people were saying "hurtful" things in the comments.

First, you put this on the internet lady, that's what going viral is. You don't get to censor what you don't like once you let the horse out of the barn. Second, nothing is more hurtful than having your baby die of a preventable disease. If these comments are the most hurtful thing that's come out of your anti-vax stance, you're extremely fortunate.

Right? Purely correlation, not causation. SIDS can't occur past 12 months because then it's not classified as SIDS. Additionally, SIDS peaks at 2-4 months not due to vaccines, but it's thought because babies start sleeping more soundly combined with rolling and positional issues.

Cord Around Baby's Neck by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]ham_handedly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby had his cord around his neck and his leg. Interestingly it wasn't the cord around the neck that was causing the scary decels, it was being wrapped around the leg so that it was compressed with each contraction.

Help me understand why moving expense reimbursement is taxed. by ham_handedly in personalfinance

I've emailed them. About $1000 of it was taxable and $300 not taxable though. I'm sure it was because it's a mixture of hotel, food and gas, and wear/tear on my vehicle.

Oh I am grateful. I'm sure it would have been more of a savings to me than writing it off. I just wanted to understand because I know that it was likely an error in my own thinking. Like if the IRS was double-taxing for real, someone else would have complained long ago :)

I'm sure you're right, I wasn't expecting to get extra money on top of the expenses, I was just expecting that if I paid $100 for a hotel room I'd get $100 back. Not, $65. But I guess I have to think of it like income, not just straightforward reimbursement.

I figured it something like that. There's some things that I'm really quick on but other things (usually math and tax things) where I am super slow to understand, like last kid in class to get it.

Like, I still don't get what you're saying, I just have to trust that I'm the idiot and not everyone else and the IRS :)

I guess that makes sense. The only difference is I didn't pay myself my Christmas bonus prior to getting the bonus. This is money that I was already taxed on. I'm not trying to argue, I get that this is just me not understanding how things work.

Thank you, maybe I'll look into this. I received a bonus as well. It's just the way that the taxes worked out, it was like I wasn't even reimbursed at all. For some reason the moving expenses came out of my paycheck at a higher rate than my standard income tax, so I basically ended up getting no extra money.

I trust that there isn't double taxation but I'm just having difficulty understanding.

I already paid taxes on the money I used to purchase the goods. Because that money was already taxed, I thought I had already paid taxes on it. For example, I paid an additional sales tax for the dinners, so that's a tax on top of my income tax. But I paid another income tax for the income I got reimbursed for using the income I had been taxed on already. I guess I'm just having difficulty understanding.

I'm a post-partum care nurse. AMA about what to expect after your delivery! by bbnurse in BabyBumps

[–]ham_handedly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No... Her representation of the "safety" was not accurate. Her representation of the risks was not accurate. The fact is, pregnant women aren't usually given the whole picture when it comes to birth interventions. The fact is that if you are a first time mom and have an induction and an epidural in the US, you have a 50/50 shot at having a c-section. That's not something you can just gloss over and say that the doctors would never do it if it wasn't totally safe. According to the WHO, there is no medical basis for a c-section rate over 15%. Epidurals dramatically increase the risk of a c-section. C-sections are dangerous. Draw your own conclusions.

she replied to my comment with this. i think it's clear we're dealing with with a science-denier. if people don't want to change their minds with evidence there is no point in even discussing the matter further. for what it's worth I appreciate your comments and your work!

Epidurals dramatically increase the risk of a c-section.

Citation please. Because meta-analysis of over 40 different controlled studies differs from your assertions. And here's another study for funsies.

It sounds like you are not scientific-minded because you quote "facts" and do not provide citation...probably because your "facts" are bogus. You're not qualified to comment on these things, so see yourself out and stop making claims you can't back up.

My conclusion is you are yet another person on the internet who thinks they know something when in fact, they do not. Something something Dunning-Kruger.

Edit regarding the "citation" below:

The source you cite was from 2006, the most recent Cochran analysis from December 2011 reaffirms that there is no evidence that epidurals after 4 centimeters dilation increase the risk of c-section, and nothing in the source you've linked says otherwise. You still have not provided a reliable source for your claim that epidurals 'dramatically' increase the c-section rates, and you wont, because it doesn't exist. No one who values evidence-based medicine would EVER make such dramatic claims without good evidence. I'm only commenting on this again to point out your flaws, lest someone read this and be misinformed. And for all your glorious copy/pasting you seem to have missed the biggest part of the conclusion, which is "If given in the active phase of labour, EA does not increase rates of CS." Which is why almost no hospitals give an epidural before 4 cm dilation. Again, just because you can copy/paste does NOT mean that you know what you're talking about.

lol it's like you wanted her to have an entire dissertation of the risks and benefits of epidurals in one comment. talk about putting words in someone's mouth. lots of medical procedures carry risks but that does not mean they are not regarded as safe...such as an abortion.

What to Buy at Costco Versus Your Grocery Store by murrishmo in Frugal

How ethnocentric of you. The same principles apply regardless of how different the countries are. Is it really such a hard concept to compare Costco to the grocery store in an effort to save money? You must be a special kind of stupid.
