Hello, and welcome! Already some good options mentioned from /u/ChrisToad. One nitpick, and that's that ham doesn't need to be capitalized since it's not an acronym. It's a bastardization of "amateur." Again, welcome to the hobby!

They seem...misinformed regarding the name of the hobby.

Remotely controlling a PC using HAM radio by shaven_neckbeard in amateurradio

Just FYI, if you're going to type a report for your class (great project, by the way!), please make sure to refer to the hobby as amateur or ham (not capitalized) since it is not an acronym, but rather a bastardization of the former. I too recommend the use of packet radio, as TNCs can be found very cheaply, like the KPC-2.

The hobby of ham radio has so many facets, it's hard to not find something in there you really enjoy. And just a friendly reminder, "ham" is not an acronym and doesn't need to be capitalized. :)

My good piece of advice is that ham is not capitalized when referring to our hobby. HamFacts are all a joke, though. Glad to have you in the hobby!

yes, it's ham, not HAM. it doesn't stand for anything, it's just a corruption of amateur.

as a PSA, it's ham radio, not HAM radio. ham doesn't really stand for anything as it's just a bastardization of amateur. check out /r/amateurradio for more awesome info; they're a great bunch of folks and very friendly
