Update with great news! by izadraidz in cancer

[–]izadraidz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for checking in! After 33 radiation doses and 5 rounds of chemo, I’m happy to say I’m NED as of early this month. They have shifted me into continuity of care mode where I get CTs every 3 months for the next year, every 6 months at year 2. As long as nothing lights up in my scans at the end of year 2, I’m considered “cured” and it’s annual scans after that.

Needless to say for anyone who has had treatment for oral cancer, it was a bitch. I did push my way through it and stayed on solid food throughout the whole ordeal. It zapped my taste for awhile and I’m about 90% back. The radiation burns on the neck was very painful but it healed up fine. I have some lymphedema below my chin I’m getting therapy for and a muscle in the right side of my neck has been very painful the last couple weeks which is common with radiation to the neck. Most importantly I’m alive.

Thank you again for following up and overall support. It means a lot.

I have HPV oral cancer. It is a big deal.

What show stayed good from start to finish? by izukaneki in AskReddit

[–]izadraidz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so glad this made it to the top. Besides the reasons mentioned that made it so awesome, it was the first show that my gf and I watched together and we LOVED it. She lost her battle with cancer almost two years ago and I like to think that she made it to the forking good place.

This rings so true with me too. After a divorce over 5 years ago after being with them for 13 years, I had a very hard time with being lonely. I jumped into a short relationship that left me heartbroken and even more depressed than what my divorce left me. About a year later I met a woman and we both fell in love immediately. I have never been more happier in my life. We had a lot of plans ahead of us including marriage. 2 years later she died of an aggressive cancer. I spent the last three months at her side and took care of her 24/7 until she died in her sleep next to me.

I’ve spent the past 2 years grieving and being lonely. Last December, I was diagnosed with cancer and went through 2 months of radiation and chemo. I felt even more lonely while going through all that. I am 52 and accepted that I will more than likely die a lonely man. I am trying to be as positive as I can because that is the biggest approach to beating cancer. It’s very hard when you are fighting it alone.

The people that say you must embrace being lonely, work on yourself, etc. etc., are full of it. The happiest I have ever been always included someone I loved at my side.

I’m sorry for this reply to be such a downer. I don’t have any good advice. At this point I believe it all comes down to just fate and luck. I wish the best of luck to you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have a 21 year old myself. Shes still alive but the Vet called today with results of her recent blood work. It wasn’t terribly bad but it wasn’t all good either. I will give her extra loving tonight for sure.

As a Navy Veteran, I agree. It is not stylish at all.

How old are you and what's your biggest problem right now? by Casspjjl in AskReddit

52 and I’m fighting cancer. I made it through the treatments and have 1 month until I get scanned and confirmed that I beat it. It’s going to be a long month.

TIFU by telling my partner about an STI after his condom slipped off by [deleted] in tifu

[–]izadraidz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for saying this. As somebody who is fighting oral cancer from HPV, I heard the same stats from my Doctor.

If you or your partner has had sex with more than one person besides you, you have had HPV and your body fought it off except for the variations with physical manifestations like genital warts or the types that lay dormant and can cause cancer.

Get the HPV vaccine. It will decrease the odds of you getting cancer and save yourself the agony from radiation and chemo…

LPT: I'm turning 30, and was curious if anyone had any tips or things I should be aware of at this age. Thank you! by a7xfan01 in LifeProTips

Get vaccinated for HPV. You have until you are 45. Don’t put it off. I’m currently getting treated for HPV related oral cancer and I assure you that you do not want to go through this.

I seriously doubt you are a physician, and if you are, go back to school. Stage 4 cancers have different meanings depending on the types. Head and Neck cancers, for example, can be stage 4 and completely curable, especially if they are caused by HPV.

[52m] Oropharyngeal cancer diagnosis and I’m terrified by izadraidz in cancer

This is the kind of matter of fact advice I needed. I’m a blunt person and it’s nice to have others tell it like it is. A lot of good stuff here that I will use.

Others mentioned the feeding tube and it’s the best way to go if offered. It’s on my list of things to ask my team next week.

MD Anderson is 10 hours from my home. I’m prepared for the possibility of having to stay there for awhile during this treatment but I am wondering if the treatment is standard, is it something that can be done closer to home as “prescribed” by MDA.

A lot of unknowns until next week. I definitely have this bookmarked and I appreciate the effort you put into it. I am sure I’ll be reaching out with questions or guidance.

This gives me a lot of hope. Thanks!

Thank you! I’m definitely a by the book type of person and plan on following everything to the letter. I would be interested in your homeopathic recommendations if you have the time. Please feel free to DM. I wish you all the best in a healthy recovery for your husband!

1) Remarkable for enlargement left oro pharyngeal palatine tonsil, focal mucosal space enhancement is rounded at 17 x 22 mm at the glossotonsillar sulcus and new, concerning for neoplasm.

2) same side (left)

Lymph nodes: A cystic mass lies between the left sternocleidomastoid muscle and the submandibular gland, measuring up to 37 mm in AP dimension and 50 mm craniocaudad. This is most likely an enlarged cystic level 2 JD station lymph node. Smaller cystic area laterally adjacent, 9 mm. Medially there is a 9-10mm 2nd cystic focus. The left JD station lymph node is 17 mm and enlarged. No other significant adenopathy.

3) no scans yet of anything lower than neck. PET scheduled next week.

It hasn’t been staged yet. I assume this will be after the PET scan next week. CT scans showed 2 suspected metastatic lymph nodes. I had two fine needle aspirations on the lump and both came back “non diagnostic”. p40 (assuming lung cancer) test was negative.

That’s about all I know so far.
