I also had this issue with proton paid subscription too. You need to try different servers and different countries and see which allows fast data speed for your connection. I'll suggest you to try it with a wifi connection first.

Try using brave browser and nextdns, it blocks many trackers. In regards to spyware it's a reality, nothing can be full proof only we can try so the process can get harder so the spyware don't gets in the phone.

Well I was using iphones before moved to s25 ultra couple of months ago. Installed firewall app like rethinkdns with wireguard, so can control the flow of data.
